He didn't cave to bush, he could not have legally done anything. The supreme court has already decided so what was he supposed to do? Attempt a coup?

I think if a instance owner decides to try to profit, it can happen. They could let advertisers have an account that promotes products and allow such posts to bypass community rules and disregard vote counts. You could theoretically profit from running a lemmy instance. But now your instance risks defederation and user might start leaving.

Edit: I think the smarter thing could be just asking for more donations than is needed to run the server, and pocket the excess funds. That could go on undetected as long as you falsify your operating costs to make it seem as if more funding is required. I mean I don't know if someone could actually make a living of asking for absurd amounts of donations.

I'm surprised he hasn't been imprisoned for copyright infringement. Using pirated schematics for a repair bussiness surely would've triggered law enforcement to shut him down, wouldn't it? Or is this somehow bypasses DMCA because of the first amendment? I don't know how laws work as I'm not a lawyer

I think I'll be pirating until the economy gets better. And I don't mean wall street, I mean when the average person get paid enough to have extra money for entertainment stuff. Aint nobody gonna pay for a netflix subscription every month or $70 for a game that could still have bugs, people got food to buy, bills to pay.

You want less piracy? Simple. Just give people a higher quality of life.

I've just found out that I've been banned from lemmy.ml. I have not received any notification about it, but I just so happen to check if the fediverse is working correctly and I noticed that under my user profile viewed from lemmy.ml, it says "banned".

I suspect the reason is likely because I've been criticizing extremist ideologies like Marxism-Leninism and Nazism and they couldn't take the criticism.

Has anyone else been banned by instances? Did you feel the ban justified or not?

Edit: It seem like I've made a joke about gun violence that the admins thought went too far. I guess we can't joke nowadays... 🤷‍♂️

The instance called lemmygrad promotes an ideology that's considered extremist by many instance owners, so it has been defederated by many big instances. The other ones one the list that are defederated because of an unusual number of users to content ratio, leading many instance owners to suspect that they are bot accounts used for spam so any instance with these suspicions are also defederated, not because of ideology, buy simply because of the perceived spam threat. Now I don't know how true is the bot threat, but that is what people have been saying is the reason for defederation.
