I always tell people: You can look at the last 44 years and know definitively that, at least in an economic sense, no one you're voting for cares about your welfare.

So instead of donating your money to political candidates, who have billionaires backing them and don't need your money, save or invest that money instead.

At least your investments will have some measure of representation.

Money really do work like that. People won't get better until they got sufficient economic security to get of base level subsitance thinking.

This is very true. I've been a heavy saver my whole adult life and I have a number I want to hit. If things stay mostly the same for me, I should hit it within the next 10-15 years, and then I'm putting in my two weeks.

I don't need to be like one of these people who keeps making money until I die. I just want to hit a number that gives me independence and security and I'm out.

The other thing is that we're going to have many more elderly people who outlive their savings in the coming generation.

The only good thing in all this was that watching their struggles impressed upon me at an early age the importance of savings, so even at my most destitute I've never chosen not to.

Agreed.

I hate the idea of handing her the reigns of government and the power to create untold victims with her authoritarian and selfish approach to the law.

(Problem is, that's our choice either way you vote.)

I get to stress about my 80 year-old parents driving for Doordash every day, in my car, and I have to trust that they're going to keep up with the oil changes and new tires and other maintenance.

Because when that car dies there is no backup plan. No one will employ them at their age and both major parties are content to let them starve if they don't have some other means of paying for the privilege of surviving in America.

Like you, I'd expect Kamala to paint herself in a positive light in her own book.

Personally, though, the notions that incarcerating someone for a victimless crime is positive or that our prison system is a proper answer or reformatory for victimless crimes is either exceedingly naive or euphemistically fascist. (And both of those, to me, disqualify someone for the presidency.)

[-] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

I think that, in a country that is becoming more and more fascist by the day, it's more alarming than people would be willing to admit that Harris built her prosecutorial career around targeting truants and non-violent drug users.

Her prosecutorial career is a microcosm of the fundamental problems in the US criminal justice system, which observably and disproportionately oppresses the poor and makes vast concessions for the wealthy. Her presidency, should it happen, will not change that.

Facts.

If we had a functioning government we'd make these billion-dollar space boondoggles clean up their own shit.

FINALLY I managed to get Mahomes on my fantasy team, and they rebuilt the WR corps so hopefully better numbers this year.

GO CHIEFS!

Game: Tie between Dragon Age: Origins and the original Bioshock.

Movie: Nightmare on Elm Street

TV Show: Stranger Things

Book: Man, too many to mention, but maybe The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman.

In 2008 I saw Michelle Obama speak in the 18th and Vine jazz district in Kansas City.

It was electric. She wore red and looked like a million bucks, and the speech was amazing. At the time we all honestly believed the Obamas would be elected with a historic mandate to make real, lasting change.

I remember it fondly, because the Obamas are the same people who caused me to lose faith in our Federal Government. All we got from the first black president was more war, more expensive health care, and one dead terrorist, and he had the power to do so much more.

I would be very surprised if someone born into wealth like Elon Musk ever dumpster dived for a burger or chicken nugget.

You have a better chance of snapping a photo of Bigfoot than you have of a voter fraud incident in your jurisdiction, but it infuriates me that the myth of widespread voter fraud persists.

The article states that these horrendous, disgusting infractions of health regulations have been documented out for at least the previous year, but given their severity, I'd imagine it's always been this way at Boar's Head production facilities.

I'm going to cook my deli meats from now on, no matter where they come from.

In a groundbreaking experiment, Japanese researchers transferred regenerative genes to fruit flies, leading to improved intestinal health and enhanced stem cell activity. This discovery opens new possibilities for anti-aging strategies in higher organisms, including humans, through targeted gene therapy.

I'm sharing this because it's fun, and can be a nice diversion from all the doomscrolling. There are lots of puzzles and random digital knick knacks. Enjoy!

Just another example of something that could be universal if we taxed the rich appropriately.

FLINT—Eight days after entering the world, Khi’Meir Taylor made another debut — this time in what could be a national spotlight.

Wednesday was the first day of a $55 million experiment to test whether cash payments can protect children from the toxic stress of poverty.

I just thought it would be cool to put this out there. The Satellites featured several local skaters from Fountain City Roller Derby: Tiff (a former Team USA skater), Mel Malice, Aneeda Hurtcha, Annie Maul, and Queen of Hurts. As if that wasn't cool enough, Olympic Gold Medalist Erin Jackson was also skating for the Satellites.

Pretty. Effing. Rad.

If you're interested in checking out roller derby, you can find more info on fountaincityrollerderby.com.

Personally, my favorite is the Viking of Stamford Bridge. The thought that one man taking out 40 English soldiers and completely altering history in one epic fight is just awesome, and no one recorded his name.

They just gave him a kickass title instead.

Awesome.

This is the picture I like to show artists when they hate their stuff after a single layer of work, because I hate all of my stuff after a single layer of work, but it's important to remember it's a process.
