Wind the window down, stomp the A-pedal and clutch pedal into the floor, turn the key until the engine roars, dump the clutch like it's last season's fashion. Savour the heady mixture of tyre smoke and unburnt fuel as you peal out into traffic.

From the outside it's not obvious how many variables influence scientific research that have absolutely nothing to do with science or the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

Being scientifically literate is insufficient. We must also be highly sceptical and apply critical thinking to the work of other scientists, particularly when large sums of money are involved and the inevitable conflicts of interest that entails.

People with money are able to fund research but they will never be scientists because they are only interested in what is true to the extent it will make money.

I struggled with this most of my life without knowing why, always feeling like I never measured up. Since being diagnosed and treated at 47 it made a huge difference. I set reasonable boundaries at work and I'm blessed with a sympathetic manager. He gives me tasks that allow me to play to my strengths and make a positive difference in the workplace.

This is the home of car culture and it's the reason the climate change movement has seen such little traction. 80% of this problem could be solved by a decent intercity rail network combined with light rail and cycle paths in the densely populated areas. Sometimes a car is the only solution but everything looks like a nail when your only tool is a hammer.

The same story with psychedelic research, the promising results of the years leading up to prohibition were terminated from one day to the next.

We know that these substances are the only medication that is efficacious for treatment resistant depression and indicated for many other disorders.

The problem, as ever, is conservatives making choices they don't understand for everyone else.

I lived next to the most dangerous puffin crossing in the UK (Whitley, Coventry). This statistic seemed unbelievable at first because the crossing doesn't look dangerous but over the years I came to believe it. I personally witnessed the aftermath of four accidents and was curious about their origin. The way local people used the crossing was to walk up, press the button and walk across, often without looking at the road. There was a time delay of about a minute and as such the crossing was usually empty by the time the light was red and the cars were waiting for nobody.

I suppose nobody wants to be a loser but some people are pathological with it. I would imagine a typical scenario is some young guy has reached the limit of what he can achieve in a game and is still losing. They implement cheats for a while and then quit the game entirely because it still doesn't scratch the itch and now it's also become boring. Everyone loses.

Chewing coca leaves seems to have a long history that continues to this day. I hear it's common practice among long distance drivers of the present and it wouldn't be surprising to find out that this has been the case ever since people made long transits on foot or horseback. Not sure we can call it cocaine though, isn't that term reserved for the hydrochloride salt form of the drug?
