Get commercial washer and dryer, Speed Queen, on the used market.

A used model will cost as much as a new Samsung consumer model, but it'll last far longer and has replaceable hardware inside.

Put together a privacy and security presentation.

Does your family use password managers? (And dear god not Lastpass, with their breech a couple years ago).

What do your parents do if one is incapacitated? The self-hosting community has discussions on managing this.

This is a great opportunity for you to learn a lot of stuff and show your parents how to approach security and privacy.

Start with understanding their needs... Truly understanding, take your time. Solutions can always be found later, once the requirements are well understood.

As an aside, as someone likely old enough to be your grandparent, I can't imagine needing an intercom in a house. Some of my family had them growing up, and found it to be not nearly as useful as they thought it would be.

Slavery?

That's a LION. It would take him about half a second to remove every head we see in frame.

Plus he looks shaved, which I'm inferring means he's being treated for something.

Yea, no.

Take it at face value, as something that may possibly be true.

Then evaluate.

What you're saying is guilty until proven otherwise.

No - someone makes a positive claim, onus is on proving the positive claim.

There was always an underlying assumption that once x happens my real life will begin, and I will rise above my hang-ups.

I think most of us* think this way, and have to un-learn this, since it's flawed thinking.

We "rise above our hangups", by continually working to be better people. We never fully accomplish this - just like physical exercise never ends, so too do emotional, mental, and spiritual exercise.

*When I say "most of us", I mean practically everyone has to unlearn this at some point.

Therapy. If you're not doing it, start. CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will likely help a lot, given the phrasing you use (such as above). If nothing else, go find a layman's intro to CBT, such as "Your Erroneous Zones" by Wayne Dyer (a few bucks on Amazon, it's from about 1976). I think you'll see yourself in the first few pages.

As a bit of perspective - many thinkers over the eons have posited that our lives can be viewed in phases, and that we all more or less experience similar patterns throughout life (childhood, teens, young adult, etc, etc).

I'm not saying you can make this go away, just that the only thing any of us can do is continually work on such things.

But please get therapy - a doc will have better insight as to what can help you best.

I'd say if this is a concern for you (stuff continues to work if you're hit by a bus), then you should design it with that use in mind, and document it sufficiently to enable that, and also have someone else test your documentation.

My goals are to keep the setup simple and intuitive (in addition to documenting it and showing people how it works).

Hell, do some videos if you have to!

Isn't there a community for this very discussion?

It definitely comes up in self-hosting.

For too many people, cars are beyond comprehension.

Most people can't even explain how a toaster works.

As Asimov said, it's like magic...its just not as advanced tech as one would think is required.

The increased safety in cars since the 90's is mostly to do with massively improved cabin strength (see growth in A and C pillars), and airbags. Crumple zones already existed and were constantly being improved. But you can't control the crumple if the cabin collapses.

I'm painfully aware of the lack of safety capability of my 80's car when I'm driving.

Even cars in the 90's were still mostly using the same tech as always, with modest improvements.

Speedo's didn't really start changing from cable until the 90's. Not that being super accurate is meaningful anyway - they never have been.

I've used Send To SD Card for years and years.

Though lately I've been relying on MixPlorer.

Doesn't matter what drives are "meant" to do: shit happens.

The only real insurance against data loss is duplication.
