Bruh, they have like 196 on 3 instances

My entire front page ~~is~~ was filled with 196

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sigh... 196 was the reason I figured out how to block communities.

What's the new ones so I can block them as well?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Also 196 - not joking. Just browse by All and you will definitely see it.:-P

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I find the latter part absolutely hilarious 😂 😆 - so much so that I'm even helping, and hoping that I'm not crossing a line into spam:-)

I fail to see the rule issue?

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honestly I feel if the problem was unfairly banned people, they could have just opened the 196 comm on lw and run it in parallel and let people post on both whichever they prefer. It's not like people will crossposts their memes (probably)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

That's bc you are kind to think about other people, and anarchist enough to realize that even if you do not, others will still think of themselves in the end.

These mods seem incapable of thinking about the situation from the perspective of what would best serve their users. I don't know if it's ego or what, but something is standing in the way of that.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People seriously need to relax. Both the mods and the users. Just forget about it and continue shitposting in whatever community, it's not even worth being upset about. Shit happens, nobody is perfect, and it's fucking c/196, everyone should just calm the FUCK down!

Obligatory

I'm perfectly calm, dude.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People will. In the meantime it's fun to think about (perhaps especially distracting from certain political events happening today), and anyway why choose to be upset that people are excited about it? :-P

This is Lemmy: here we LIVE for the DRAMA! (/s)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Meh, it may be fun for you, but I can guarantee it's not fun for those moderators. It's pretty discouraging when you put so much of your time into moderating a community and then it turns on you like that. They made a mistake, sure, but their intentions were for the good of the community at the end of the day. No need for people to be dicks about it.

I highly advise reading through the entirety of the multiple posts that they and Ada have made on the subject. You are missing a lot if you think that's all that it is.

Mods always have a duty - to themselves yes but also to the admins of a place, and to their user base. These mods did not simply "make a mistake", they told the users that they owned them, and they also told the admin who has previously granted them mod status in the first place after being the sole mod to go fly a kite, and then threw her under the bus, multiple times during the course of this. Oh, and they also failed their own responsibilities to themselves - first and foremost to actually check the modlog reports to keep that clean (those don't cross federate, hence atm require logging onto a local account to read, which they collectively refused to do thus leaving those reports for multiple days at a time).

This is rare to see such an epic fuck-up. This might legit make mainstream media and define how people talk about Lemmy for years to come. So I know it's a lot, but it might be worth your time?

I am not asking you to believe me - take a look, you'll see it. This is far beyond normal.

Edit: kudos for trying to see the best in the situation and offer the mods the benefit of the doubt where possible, but also... when you read it, you'll see why this is such a big deal.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I'm not going to do that, sorry. They are volunteer moderators of an extremely niche internet community based around posting random memes, and they locked the community and then unlocked it like a day later. There is nothing that I could possibly read that would make me view this situation as an "epic fuck-up" or something that people will even remember occurring years from now.

Take a step back, get off Lemmy and go do something fun IRL and then come back and post about it. That's the kind of content we need, not all of this judgment and whinging about pedestrian drama.

Well this just got more confusing.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The old mods seem absolutely determined to sink this ship as best as they possibly can.:-) Now, rather than even so much as "allow" people to post to the newly formed community, they are trying to reassert their dominance over their old stomping grounds that they said they were done with, except now that others have expressed interest in it too, don't seem to be done at all.

By which I mean this post.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There sooo much happening right now!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

It's a bit crazy ha ha

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Halfway, and yet somehow this meme still seems to remain true regardless:-).

Perhaps instead of relying on the (old, now LW) mods to step aside, Ada will appoint the mods of the new letter community to be the head of the old numeric one instead, on lemmy.blahaj.zone.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think what I'm going to do is ignore it and it should have all sorted itself out in a few days.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish I could've been this wise a few hours ago, now I've sunken cost myself into not being able to ignore it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To be honest, I'd largely ignored 196 before this as it seems like random nonsense, so it wasn't too hard to carry on just doing that. It's just I now need to ignore three communities not one but it isn't triple the work.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Random nonsense is good way to put it, it is basically just a meme community with a greater emphasis on queer-friendliness (and zero quality standards). I personally enjoy it, but it's certainly not for everyone. Blocking them might be a shout, just look at All.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Ah yes, time to totally ignore all of this and just browse All to my heart's content, surely nothing will ever disturb the sanctity of my browsing experie - WHAT THE HELL!? :-P

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

So wait, are we still posting to bunch-of-letters or to numbers?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I suggested on [email protected] that the mods resign. Let's see if they do

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

I've just realised Americans don't say the "and" in numbers.

So instead of "a hundred and ninety six", they remove the "and", and they've just been walking around saying things like "a hundred ninety six" for years.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

I mean, it's pretty commonly said, especially in a colloquial setting. More people than not probably use it.

But there is a convention that the "and" should be adhered to when a decimal is present; that said, – like many grammar rules – this isn't far from universally followed.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's worse than that - I'd actually say "one ninety six".

But in my head I always read the comm name as "one nine six".

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

To be fair, I probably say things like "one ninety six" or "one nine six" when referring to measurements.

i.e. how far is it between those two? "2... fifty four... point... 3". I guess there's a sort of silent "metres" "centimetres" etc in there.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Chinese say 1 hundred 9 ten 6 as an added data point

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That pretty much makes sense - and the American manner makes sense, it's just so similar to what I'm familiar with, but slightly different, so looks really wrong to my brain.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Germans say 1 hundred 6 and 9 ten... Because Germans like to be special. Learning German makes me appreciate Chinese and English counting. Although the -hundred delimitation confuses foreign speakers. Such as 15-hundred is actually 1,500

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

"Right, it should be a hundred ninety and six"

*my dumb brain after reading your first sentence quick translating from Spanish.
