I usually upgrade my PC every ~2 years, and I’m at a crossroads right now. My current setup is a 13900K paired with a TUF 3090 Ti, which I bought in October 2022. I’m not super dialed into hardware news, but I’ve deduced the next-gen of GPUs are on the horizon this spring. Coupled with the performance of the 9800X3D, I'm thinking that is the right time to upgrade.
Here’s my dilemma:
I bought the 3090 Ti for just $990 two years ago, which is still below what most used cards are going for on eBay today. I bought that level of GPU specifically to drive DCS in VR, which apparently is an absolutely epic VRAM hog. On most benchmarks, though, the 3090 is starting to lag a bit, and I'm sure the 5000 series will push it further down.
The rumored prices of the 5090 seem insane, and if I went for the 5080 (my likely pick), it’d (probably, based on the leaked specs) be a downgrade in VRAM (24GB → 16GB). That makes me hesitant.
Here are the options I’m considering:
- Sell the 3090 Ti now and move to a 7900 XTX. It’s got the same VRAM, better performance overall, and costs under $1k, so the swap would be nearly cost-neutral. I’d maximize the 3090’s resale value before the 5000 series drops, but I haven’t used an AMD GPU in 15+ years and I’m unsure about the platform.
- Swap the 3090 Ti for a 5080. This will cost more, as the 3090’s resale value will likely drop after the 5000s release. I'm sure the 5080 will be a performance beast, but the 16GB VRAM worries me for DCS purposes.
- Stick with the 3090 Ti for now, upgrade CPU/mobo, and wait for the 6000(?) series or something else later. The 3090 Ti still runs most games I play at max settings, and I could delay the GPU upgrade until the next-next gen.
What would you do? Anything pertinent I'm missing? Any advice is appreciated!
