Rules:

  1. All DubVee instance rules apply. See the sidebar at https://dubvee.org/. Those are pretty comprehensive, so we don't really need to add much to those.
  2. No politics outside of what's referenced on the show. Let's leave that drama elsewhere since there's plenty of it.
  3. All posts must be 30 Rock related or adjacent. You dummies are awesome, so I don't think I've ever had to mod any posts for this, but codifying it for good measure.
  4. Less a rule and more of a guideline, but please try to provide alt text if your instance + client combination support it. If not, then please try to make an effort to provide a description of any image posts in the post body. Let's be an a11y when we can :)
  5. Don't make fun of people for misusing dated cultural references. Are we all cowabunga on this?
  6. No talking about Krang. It would be a waste of time to talk about Krang on ~~television~~ the internet.

I am trying a different video host with this one. Though this host seems to be more temporary (videos uploaded by free users get automatically deleted once they have not been downloaded in a while), Catbox (my usual go-to for videos I make for Lemmy) is very slow and also seems to have a new rule against using it to hotlink videos for streaming on other sites.

Longer-term backups

Where are you seeing that hotlinking is not allowed? The only mention I see of it is if using it for commercial purposes is not allowed.

Have you looked into using Peertube at all? Seems like if you can find a good instance, it would work well. It's also more optimized than direct video link sharing and can handle the multiple quality levels transparently.

Personally, the whole reason I built Tesseract is because I hate leaving the app for media content and generally won't. This host doesn't provide any direct access to the file; it can only be viewed from the outside page. Even Imgur will give you a direct link for embedding.

For Catbox, I do use it from time to time for some medium-sized GIFs, but I'll usually wrap the link in Tesseract's media proxy so it only has to fetch the original file once every few days at most (it keeps 'hot' items in the cache longer and can re-fetch as needed). Granted, not all Tesseract installations in the wild enable the media proxy (it's disabled by default), so that may not be an option for everyone.

That said, I now want to spice up some meeting recordings with some unnecessary bleeping

I think I misinterpreted that section! After rereading, you're right: my usage here should be fine.

As for something like Peertube or Pixelfed, I tend to prefer services that allow anonymous uploads over having to make an account and associate videos with "me". But that really is the best way to go about it, isn't it?
