I like candidates that don't aspire to be tinpot dictators.

He wants to be able to direct the Justice Department to ignore his crimes and persecute his political enemies. <— Writing this, I realize it flows off the keyboard as the sort of breathless rage bait that you see on Twitter, but in this case it is literally true.

How could this ever go wrong?

Probably removing term limits also, Putin style. i remember him throwing this idea around before.

He can't, that's an amendment so he'd need another amendment to get rid of it. Hed need to get 38 state lesiglatures on board and there's only 27 states with republican controlled legislatiures.

Russia's ammendment was passed via popular vote. If we passed amendments the same way I'd be concerned, but our current method makes it highly unlikely.

I hope so. That's good to know it would be so difficult to pass, I just remember him talking about wanting it.

(But him wanting something and it being possible aren't necessarily in the same universe, thank goodness)

NYTimes archive link and summary https://archive.ph/2023.07.18-212946/https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/17/us/politics/trump-plans-2025.html

Donald Trump and his allies are planning to vastly expand presidential power if he wins the 2024 election. Their plans include bringing independent agencies like the FCC and FTC under direct presidential control, reviving the practice of impounding funds, and centralizing more authority in the Oval Office. Trump intends to issue an executive order requiring independent agencies to submit actions to the White House for review. Critics argue these moves would undermine checks and balances and congressional oversight of the executive branch, and could lead to a power grab by the president. However, Trump allies claim they are simply seeking to realign the federal government with conservative principles.

Why is the right speedrunning the rise of the third reich? Can we trust them to ever be in power again or will every republican candidate from this point forward be eagerly awaiting the evisceration of democracy and human rights and not just giving tax breaks to corporations and reducing regulation?

Shocked this didn't get more votes. This seems not good
