In St Lucia, the moment I stepped outside it smelt strongly of smoke. Are there hazard reduction burns going on?

Bushfires started early

On Thursday morning, smouldering bushfires near Flagstone and Beaudesert produced a thick smoke haze over Brisbane and placed residents near Muldoon at risk of moving from their homes.

Can't smell anything but looking south was a pretty gnarly looking smoke or cloud moving around.

Not sure but I recently found there are satellites monitoring for hotspots you can look at to see if there are fires nearby: https://firenorth.org.au/nafi3/

Click on "South QLD" in the sidebar then zoom in on the map. It's quite eye opening how many fires are burning across the state at any one time.
