MODERATORS

I haven't been able to post anything for the last two days. I don't know if I was banned for a bit or not since I received no notice or warning.

If it wasn't a ban what happened?

How were you "not able to post anything"? If you noticed you weren't able to post anything (e.g. got an error message), that was (by definition) probably not shadow banning.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I wasn't getting anything. I would press the post button and it would just endlessly loop and never post.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That isn't shadow banning, it sounds more like a server (performance?) issue on your instance.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Probably. It's over now whatever it was.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Any error code in the web developer console?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

That's happened any time I've tried posting from a desktop browser. Works fine from Connect on android.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The Lemmy software doesn't have shadow banning, and in fact has a mod log that is very transparent about moderator actions. The modlog doesn't seem to have anything for you.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Then I wonder what the problem was?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It was probably just your connection timing out.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Ot could also be a date/time issue causing SSL handshakes to fail.

Happens pretty often with my dead bios battery.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Most likely a VPN issue as Lemmy.world attempts to block vpn users from creating posts/comments.

You can still upvote/downvote though.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's such a lazy bitch move to blanket block vpn users. For anyone intent on causing meaningful harm it's trivial to bypass, so the only ones really impacted are the innocent mass of privacy minded people. Unnecessary hassle for people doing nothing wrong.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

It's the most popular instance with questionable politics and moderation and this move pushes people to other instances before they even discover deeper issues there. Most instances have zero issues with VPNs, and it doesn't even matter what is the parent instance of community you're posting to. Which means you can post the same stuff into the same place from almost any other instance using VPN.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Except i don't run it when I'm on lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Every ban on lemmy is effectively a shadow ban as you don't get notified for it

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Sure about this? I got notification of being banned from the tankie instance for what I think they referred to as western propaganda

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Did you point out that the sky is blue?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It was for saying Ukraine has a right to defend itself from Russia and if Russia wants the war to end they should leave lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Neo liberal cringe woke response /s

No but one time before the defed I had like four hexbear accounts calling me a propagandist because I posted the Wikipedia link to the Holodomor (Ukrainian Genocide).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Was it from a bot or Lemmy itself? If it was from a bot it doesn't really count since admins set that feature up themselves, it's not a part of Lemmy itself.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago

It was probably your instance having issues

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I cant post if I have protonvpn running, or at least if Im connected to certain proton servers. It could be along those lines - whatever IP you were coming from might be blocked, probably via cloudflare?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

As others have said lemmy.world actively bans anyone using a vpn.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I have surfshark but I only run it when I'm torrenting. (since that's all VPN's are pretty much good for nowadays.)

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

VPNs are very useful for many different purposes, just nothing (except torrenting) which you need.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

List them. 90% of websites I visit have either reduced features (ie; can't post or comment) or completely block any access to them when using a VPN.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't think I've ever had that issue except for some streaming stuff.

You can search online instead of demanding I list reasons.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

You're the one who made the argument that there were plenty of uses. The onus is on you to back up your suppositions. Not me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm not who you originally asked, but one of the things other than torrenting that I use a VPN for is bypassing arbitrary geo-restrictions on websites. A lot of (mostly US) websites don't allow you to access them if you aren't in the country, or in some cases, if you don't live in the right state.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 months ago

I've used it for that too, but even that's going away. Pretty soon I think ISP's (or governments) will clamp down on VPN's. Or they will make the argument that if you want to use a VPN, then you can only use "THEIR" VPN

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

This isn't an academic essay, go look yourself.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Hide Your Traffic from ISP is the key feature for VPN as they data mine it and sell it to data aggregators.

Sad reality most normies websites are going full agro on VPN users. My tinfoil is that VPN reduces data fidelity so they are salty about that. As data is less valuable.

If website like fidelity/vanguard (money manager) can run on firefox fork with 69 privacy security extensions or their apps can run on degoogled phone, then all this other clowns are lying sacks of shit... when they are saying it they finger printing your buthole for "security" reasons.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

Check the mod log. There's a link to it in the footer.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Might be your home instance is having performance issues, resulting in your posts getting timeouts or bad gateway errors.

You getting any specific error messages from your client when you try to post?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

It has banning without message. It is possible your ban only showed up in the modlog.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I question the health of anybody who even has "shadow ban" in their brain when an instance breaks.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Hey, if you got to enjoy that feature from reddit like me, you'd be paranoid too
