More serious politics should go in [email protected].

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Ah yes, the notorious proposed M15 motorway, good journalism there metro.

Not only in the headline but twice in the article! How does this happen? Does the Metro have no editor? No proofreaders?

I'd say it was written by an AI, but I doubt even an AI would make such a mistake.

Cost-cutting. No. No.

I passionately dislike the tories, and there's a daily laundry list of corrupt / unkind things we can criticise them on. I don't think this issue is specific to them though, I'd imagine Labour will have to deal with the same shit from hostile nation states once they're (hopefully) back in power.

They're going to target whoever is in control at any given point.

Most of the big issues aren’t specific to the Tories, to be fair, they’re mostly a result of the way our world has been organised by the ruling elite to steal as much wealth as possible.

The Tories are definitely one of the worst parties that you can vote for, but a better world sadly isn’t on the ballot, all we get to vote for is whether or not we would like some extra bigotry and cruelty.

For a truly better world we need to take action outside of the ballot box, and I’m not talking about gluing ourselves to things or blocking a road. We need to work together to build a better world completely separate from all of the systems controlled by the state and the wealthy.

They often get promising candidates early in their career and that allows them to turn the screws when they rise through the ranks. It's why Oxford and Cambridge was (still is?) a good hunting ground for the KGB. So I imagine they've got their hooks into people in Labour too.

(still is?)

The KGB stopped existing nearly 32 years ago now along with the USSR so it would be a bit surprising if it was still looking to recruit at Oxbridge...

KGB still exists in Belarus.

Hence the question mark - I imagine the FSB/SVR still keep hooks in the water, as do many secret services (wouldn't be surprised if the Yanks were doing it too).

So MI5 can get parties to drop candidates just by saying they "could" be a spy, without proof, or conviction?

Literally anyone "could" be a spy.

Doesn't that mean the spooks can basically veto any candidate they don't like?

You can have credible evidence about something that is inadmissible in a court of law, or even from a secure source that they do not want to reveal. So yes, MI5 can make claims without having to be held to account for them. I personally am more than happy about that.
