At the moment, birthdays that appear in Google Calendar are based on Google Contacts information, but manual creation is now coming.

Wow, are we in the future or something?? Jesus christ, Google. πŸ’€

why is this news, though? before contacts integration was a thing i created yearly-repeat events for birthdays of family and close friends.

i now get reminded twice! once for my manually-created entry and once more for the contact integration.

... It never occurred to me to put birthdays in the contacts. I've only got recurring events!

Same here! I feel like we should get paid for giving Google this fantastic idea.

Same here. Why should I do both...?

I guess putting them in the contacts is simpler, and automatically comes up. Presumably it's one click from the calendar reminder to the contact so you can call/text them.

Dunno, not a big deal either way.

Just add them as an event that repeats yearly.

Rat out my friends by telling Google their DOB? Will they also add a field for mothers' maiden name? No thanks.

They already have your birthday (and maiden name) through your friends' contacts.

Being able to add birtdays manually is definitely useful, altough I believe it's better and more organized to add them through contacts. (Not that I actually use Google contacts/calendar.)

It took them years to finally add reminders for the birthdays (and similar special dates) in the contact app.

Remember the times when Google invented stuff that was not completely obvious? What happened to them?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Enshittification. They’re too big to care.

Oh uau. How would I have remembered birthdays until now since 15 years ago?
