I don't think they get paid until the cabin doors close, right? So all the work they do leading up to the plane taking off, that's free work.

One of those things that's like "that can't possibly be legal right?", then you remember, we're in America. Land of the "free" some terms and restrictions may apply
The freedom to ripped off by your employer is a cherished freedom in these parts. Right up there with your freedom to be massacred at school and the freedom to file bankruptcy due to medical debt.

A good way to tell if a company has ever been shitty to their employees is if they have a union. Unionizing is no easy task, and for things to get that bad it usually requires a shitty corporation.
Pay your people well. Treat them like your kids. (In the Norman Rockwell, everything is perfect, sort of way 😅)
