Don’t hesitate to advocate for Universal Basic Income (UBI).

Maybe consider how greedy capitalists will fight back (and to be fair whether life would get more difficult for retail employees).

If IRL stores are just big vending machines, you’d have to get into credit card fraud or something to shoplift 😳

That’s probably a huge hassle - always looking over your shoulder, wondering if your TOR (internet privacy) settings were up to snuff…

tl;dr guillotines

I like the idea of UBI. And I know it has “worked” in some small scale environments. But I can help but wonder if income inequality is required for our capitalist based economy to function. Like if everyone quits their job, who will drive a truck to deliver shit to the grocery store that nobody is working at?

income inequality is required for our capitalist based economy to function

Yeah, that's kinda what capitalism is. The system itself is the problem. It only "works" if there are workers for the owners to exploit, and the goal of the owners is to accumulate more and more capital. Infinite growth is impossible because the resources are finite. It's time for our economy to evolve.

You have to keep in mind that a UBI is not complete even redistribution of all wealth. It is redistribution of a relatively small portion of the wealth. It only serves to tip the scales a bit, it's not really meant to be lived off of.

it’s not really meant to be lived off of.

By definition it is, barely. That's why it's called "basic." A subsidy too small to cover even minimal living expenses would just be "UI."

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Actually didn't know that. I keep hearing about ubi experiments of like $400/mo, which is too little to survive on in the US no matter what you do.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Yeah, people love misusing the term for "experiments" that are neither "universal" nor "basic." The best part is when some galaxy-brain comes up with "hey, let's have UBI but how 'bout we means-test it?" and then I just want to respond with a Syndrome meme.

I saw another one of these from a place near my Alma Mater:

That is brilliant.

Lotta local businesses are run by absolute shitheads. It's not as simple as just local vs. corporate.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

The question is not where the moron are, but what place give them the power to harm

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Seems like all corporate businesses are run by absolute shitheads, so at least by shopping local, you're supporting your own community and not some billionaire

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

It's a good rule of thumb though

Honestly my local chain has better stuff anyways for most fresh ingredients.

They've even got Guanciale, literally every recipe I've seen with Guanciale has doubled back to assure the reader they can sub in pancetta if they can't find guanciale anywhere since it's on the less common side in the US.

Only ingredient I didn't find was well aged sausage style deli meats, but I have a feeling that if I needed that in a pinch the butchers are gonna be able to point me to somewhere that might have that.

That and dairy free cheeses for my GF but I live near a super kitchy town with an organic food store so I'm less concerned about being able to find that.

Corporations are people too.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct.

I don't think the international corporate system realizes how soon regulatory capture is going to... be not a thing. How brutal that will be for their profit margins. How that being shielded by an LLC (limited liability corporation) won't be keeping them from facing justice for their negative economic externalizations affecting the people of the entire globe for long at all. I'm going to go ahead and leave this link here as a reminder as to what has happened already in the American prison system, and is therefore not "cruel and unusual punishment". Hopefully they take the carrot instead of the stick. Lmao boomer noobs, and greedy younger noobs who are serving a machine that is an orphan crusher, out of a desire for their own personal gain and not being able to self sacrifice for the greater good of Solaria (The name of humanities universal empire, or at least what I think it should be because solar system and it sounds dank AF).

It really looks like we are going the other direction though... Like we are going to have a corporate Congress a la "Space Merchants". I mean kickbacks were just legalized by the supreme court ffs.

What makes you think we are going to get rid of regulatory capture?

I switched from Loblaws to the local Polish grocery store and the international food store and it's so much better to shop that way.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

I switched to my local Co-Op. Much better service
