MODERATORS

Revanced & being a mod doesn't seem to matter anymore.

I can still view the front page but no comments, profile, individual subreddits, etcetera now.

This is the same for me on both Sync and Boost.

Surely, I can't be the only one.

Combined with their recent shenanigans with old.reddit.com I'm finally feeling more ready to just let it go finally because there is no freaking way I'm going to use new or their crummy ad_riddled app.

Each month, I’m again reassured of my choice to just avoid Reddit. The only problem is it holds so many answers to problems. Always shows up in search results, and it’s usually the best answer out there.

It's still a good resource for stuff like that but I'm not contributing to it.

I am still hopeful that the Fediverse will take over that role soon. I mostly lurked on Reddit, but I’ve pushed myself to make the kind of posts and comments here that I liked on Reddit.

I’m not a poster but I comment here way more than I did on Reddit. Some of that is because it feels a little “safer” to comment here. Hopefully that lasts, though I fear it won’t.

You can use alternative front ends like Stealth on Android, or just use a redirect extension to a libreddit instance when finding answers for things. I personally still find good answers on reddit when researching something I know little about, so use these as it cuts out a lot of the noise from the official page/app.

I expect the quality of the content to eventually decline there, but in the meanwhile this helps at least for browsing.

The list of instances you shared was updated recently, but I tried the one url in it (the rest are onion links or i2p, and are older versions of libreddit to boot) and the page didn’t even load.

Libreddit has been discontinued for nearly a year due to not working thanks to Reddit’s API changes, though about a month ago they updated their repo to direct people to RedLib, which allegedly does work. That said, I tried the official instance and got an error. However, it’s being actively developed and looks easy to self-host. I don’t know if there’s a list of unofficial public instances.

I don’t know if there’s a list of unofficial public instances.

Found this section within the GitHub page you're linking to.

Most instances had an outage yesterday I noticed. I'll grant it's not perfect, and thanks for clarifying, I had been using, but forgot to mention, redlib as a redirect.

Self hosting is obviously the best option if you can, I just use the instances personally and 99% of the time those links have just worked for me, but I can't speak on other people's experience with them.

I'm just glad there's an alternative front end at all and there are those putting their instances out there.

I only open it in Firefox private tab with uBO.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

That seems wise.

Yep, it seems Boost died today. I don't frequent reddit these days, but my wife is still a mod there and she was using Boost for moderation right up until last night.

On the odd occasion that I do go to my old subs, they're filled with repost bots and low value comments.

Looks like reddit in a round about way is blocking user agents with the word Android in the string according to someone in the post below.

I care a whole lot less than I did last year when this saga began though so whatever I guess...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I know a few people that still stick around to moderate some places. If you have recommendations for what she switches to, please do share!

So far I've seen RedReader as an open source app for viewing, but it's quite limited so I'm not sure what it would be like for moderation

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

RedReader is pretty bad... I don't think I have the motivation to force myself to get used to how different it is even just for browsing really... Hard to imagine having to use it to moderate anything (if it were even possible... I don't think it is though).

Unfortunately, I don't think there are any moderation alternatives on mobile, nor will there likely ever be. She's going to have to start using the official app or stop moderating on mobile altogether.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

I used boost and I was wondering why it didn't beef it when a lot of apps did.

Fuck it no more mobile reddit I guess lmao

What happened to old.reddit? I haven't been back in a few months, but that was the last option that wasn't a total pain in the ass.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago

It was reverted but my bet is not for long:

Well, mine started working again this morning before I got around to trying to fix it...

/me shrugs

I'm so glad I read this comment. Yesterday I just happened to decide to try and patch RIF and was super disappointed when it didn't work, but now it does! Works just like it used to, I'm so happy

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

What changed that the apps are working again? I gave up and joined lemmy when rif died, haven't checked since.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Same here, I patched boost, still didn't work, so I gave up. Then this morning I got notifications from it and it was working.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Check out Red Reader if you use Android. It's alive and well. I think because it was made for blind users that Reddit didn't kill it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

That is 100% the reason but I've tried it and it's so bad I can't bring myself to actually use it... (Unless I get really desperate for that fix at least 😂)

what did they do to old reddit?

Boost seems to not work for me as well. Looks like I'll basically never be using reddit anymore...

So it's not just me. I only used it for the occasional search result and those times so this didn't fait affect me but this can only be good for Lemmy.
