It's getting really frustrating, almost every post has missing comments. What causes this?

EDIT: I needed to select both "English" and "Undetermined" in my language settings

Most common cause is people changing their language settings in their profile. It's a daily occurrence. The app really needs to tell people "25 messages not displayed because you are only viewing in Spanish".

I have it set to undetermined

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

It allows selecting multiple languages, but it's not clear and setting multiple is fiddly - most sites use multiple checkboxes instead for this reason. Anyway, if you select Undetermined, English and whatever else you're happy to see, you'll see a lot more comments (and posts, probably).

Edit: to select multiple, hold control while clicking/spacebarring to add another.

It should have two language settings - those you might post in (for the dropdown on making a comment/post) and for those you're happy to read (I'd just set it to all, since I can always translate anything that looks interesting).

Yeah this worked, thank you

If you block one account, and they made the top level comment, you don't see anything. Even if 100 people replied in the chain.

It'll just be blank.

Still worth it for extreme cases, but it's not like reddit where you see everything else.

Thats it? I guess Im unblocking some users.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

If you have language settings or are not showing bot accounts, those comments will be hidden too but the comment count still includes them

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's almost certainly your language settings

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Language is set to undetermined

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Adding "English" to the language settings might help (you CTRL/CMD+Click to add another language to the list, from memory)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This worked, thanks. That's really obtuse

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yep. The language thing is a bit of a mess. The devs are aware. I think they wanted to give us options and instead gave us sharp tools to cut ourselves with.

Copy thread url, paste it into an incognoto mode browser that's not logged into the instance. Compare what you see with your account settings and decide if you need to make changes or not.

I think you get the same result using the colorful button, which each post and comment has:

That's in the web UI. IDK what app OP uses.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In incognito I see all the comments... I don't know what account settings I could change to make this happen. My language is set to undetermined

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Try setting your language in your account to whatever the root thread language is.

If you recognize the language, use that. If it's in a language you don't recognize, you could put it into google translate and see what it shows up as.

If the language on the root post is your native language, then just set it for your account from undetermined to your native language.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Then you lose all the posts that aren't set to undetermined, no?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm seeing everything. Even counted the comments. Did you untick Undetermined by chance?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nope, also I can see this comment in my inbox but when I click through to it it's gone

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are the comments missing when you load the website?

I know this comment is tremendously late but I am having a similar issue while using sync. By website so you mean the official instance website(example - https://lemmy.one/ )

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, it got fixed when I selected both English and unspecified as my language

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I am sorry but it's seems you have misunderstood. Was your issue limited to only the sync app or was it occurring both on the app and the website

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Ok. Thanks for the info. We seem to be encountering different issues then.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Not sure why you're seeing that. I'm on the same instance as you and I see them all, so it's not a defederation issue. You don't have a big block list, I assume. Seems strange.
