I didn't think there would be consequences since I haven't seen anything about this. Great to hear.
United Kingdom
General community for news/discussion in the UK.
Less serious posts should go in [email protected] or [email protected]
More serious politics should go in [email protected].
Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
Seems like the authorities were just taking the time to prepare all the prosecution cases properly rather than rush in right away, which is good to hear. Too many doomers saying "all this info and nothing's being done", I was starting to worry they were right!
Well, the consequences seem to be for the people that set the scheme up, rather than the hundreds of thousands of rich people that used it.
So the people that got their computer hacked and exposed them all are getting thrown under the bus. Which is a start, but sadly the net result will be that money is still getting stuffed into dodgy offshore tax havens, they're just being a bit more choosy about who they get to administer it.
How reliable is the rule of law in Panama?
It's probably more reliable than a lot of Central American countries as it is, recently, more politically stable and trying to set itself apart as a financial haven. However, you have to wonder about the level of corruption and if it's one law for the rich there. The Panama Papers was such a big deal it had to get a show trial, you wonder what else gets brushed under the carpet.
