US government plans to phase out all life on earth in the next 30 years too.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 8 months ago

Literally. The climate implications of the US military alone are apocalyptic.

They heard that the owls support Palestine sadness

(The real reason is that barred owls are invasive and are pushing out the native owls. It's still pretty sad though because it's not the barred owls fault)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Oh no! I decided to use the barred owl as my mascot.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Thought your pfp was a Northern White-Faced Owl

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago

Oh, my PFP is just whatever came out of Dall-e when I told it to make me a screaming owl.

I meant whenever I actually release a game and need an actual studio logo, the barred owl was the most obnoxiously loud owl I could find, so that's what I was planning to use

I find it strange that we consider them invasive. If an animal flies from one part of the country to another and sets up shop, that seems like a pretty natural process that shouldn't be interfered with to me (unless maybe a huge truckload of owls was brought out West which started the whole thing I guess).

Maybe it's more about protecting an endangered owl than the actual invasiveness. Idk, sometimes natural processes fucking sucks. Anyway, humans are a part of nature so if we help out a struggling species, is that not a natural process?

The US sure loves their genocides. I'm hoping for a protracted owl war against the regime. Maybe Dirt_Owl can help set that in motion.

what the fuck, what is the excuse for this

[–] [email protected] 22 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Habitat loss making it harder for native owls to compete against invasive owls, so the US solution is to start killing owls and hope for the best

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

If they're killing the invasive species, that's actually a good call.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago (1 children)

If

The plan is to cull 90 percent of the population, so if there are one in ten misidentifications it will be a failure.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (2 children)

It's not hard to properly identify an owl, and they typically hire really good people for that stuff. Source: my [relative] used to work for the forest service as an ornithologist.

Also: if they accidentally kill some non invasive birds by accident, that's still less destructive than letting the invasive species crowd out the original ecosystem.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

Thank god it's not like some fish where half.the juvenile stages look the same.

This sounds like a betrayal equivalent to if Jane Goodall used her skills to help exterminate a tribe of gorillas

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Do you know what the forest service does? They are a conservationist organization within the US government. It's one of the most unambiguously positive parts of the government.

My relative would tag specimens of protected and endangered species of owls, note their locations, and then prevent loggers from destroying those habitats. [Relative] is a hippie environmentalist, and they literally would not have taken a job that harms animals.

More info on the forest service PDF download

Killing invasive species protects countless other species from extinction, so it has to be done. Those invasive species have their own habitat elsewhere, so they're not threatened, and they have to go.

barred owls are OP and must be nerfed

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (2 children)

@[email protected] Might as well tag them.

Nobody should talk behind someone's back, even as a joke.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 8 months ago (1 children)

They can turn their head 360 degrees so it's not my fault.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago

It's all your fault.

In fact, Adam and Eve? That was your fault too.

So like ther was this one time some mice got into some nuclear waste bags and consumed like Cobolt 60 contamination.

The the owls got a hold of the mice and the base personnel had to track down the owls because their poo was leaving radioactive waste all over.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

Who would win: the US government, or 500,000 owls?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

So this has got to be barred owls, right?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

I hope it goes like Australia and the emus.
