“We must prevent students from searching for information on the Internet themselves,” says the Liberal minister, for example.

Really weird thing when out of context, btw, perhaps translates poorly, idk?

I guess they are worried about fake news and conspiracy theories when children don't have the critical thinking required to identify them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

I mean that is something they should focus on; improving the quality of the searches, instead of pretending they can just stop it.

I'm Nordic and us not doing so well last time in Pisa isn't due to kids using technology, in my opinion.

Searching for informations by themselves maybe ?
There is also a difference between searching within a textbook, where the teacher knows what the student will find, and searching the internet, where well... we have been complaining about the enshitification enough.
Also I support not letting the kids run free on the internet before they have aquired a bit of media litteracy.
Now that I think about it, a search engine for school could be a cool thing. Tricky but cool.

After focusing on digital technology at school, Scandinavian countries are backtracking

Also, FYI, you are on a French speaking community 😄

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Sorry, I meant just the cartoon. It's on my all feed, and I got curious :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

you are on a French speaking community

(I'm not him, but)

Désolé, monsieur, it's just that Lemmy is still so small that posts pop up on main feeds despite being from non-English communities, and then you get the natural "I wonder what that is about" reaction and need to satisfy your curiosity.

No worries, but also feel free to configure your languages in your settings so that you don't see content in languages you don't understand

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Oh there are settings for that?

Thank you for letting me know. Where can I find them? User settings I presume? (Going there now.)

Warning: If you deselect Undetermined, you will not see most content.

Uff. I don't think I will though, sorry.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You should definitely keep Undertermined. Some content isn't indeed tagged.

However, you should maybe uncheck French. This post is tagged, as you can see by "Français" next to the community name.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

My point here is rather that you can't uncheck things. Either you choose all and leave French unchecked, or leave all unchecked, with undetermined unchecked as well.

Thus I won't be choosing which languages I wish to see, because I don't want to limit the threads I see to just English and especially posts which are solely designated as English, because most posts aren't designated as English even if they are in English.

So, I apologize for my continued presence on forums I might not speak the language of.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You can choose both Undetermined and English (and any additional languages you want) you don't have to only select one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Oh, true.

But I don't wish to limit myself, I'm always learning new languages and I think PIE languages are all pretty similar, so being exposed to them is always good.

Open link, then translate the webpage with your browser?

That's what I did.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Sorry, I meant just the cartoon.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Oh right, true.
