Clathrus archeri is not known to be toxic, however, consuming this fungus would not be enjoyable. Due to the rotting stench of stinkhorns, culinary application is not a common thought. There is also no record of the fungus being treated as a delicacy.

Lol. Damn near every fungi on Wikipedia has a toxicology section. But this one is just like, No one would ever think about eating this so who fucking knows?

All fungi are edible. Some are only edible once.

Maybe despite it's shite smell it's like super duper delicious and nobody has tried until now?

[-] [email protected] 15 points 6 months ago

You go first.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago

Or maybe it's a super food like Durian

[-] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago

Yeah that one

[-] [email protected] 18 points 6 months ago

This one obviously doesn't want us to eat it haha.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

Might be a hell of a trip though.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago

So yeah, it's likely no one has ever tried to eat one... but I feel pretty confident someone's tried to fuck one.

I have a valuable cylinder stuck in a octopus stinkhorn and I can't get it out, what do I do?

[-] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Rip and tear until it is done

That's crazy. There are people out there who intentionally rot meat in order to eat it, but this one comes pre-smelly and it's not actually rotten and nobody eats it? That's fucked up

[-] [email protected] 82 points 6 months ago

They are really cool, I saw one in the wild in southern Germany last fall

[-] [email protected] 57 points 6 months ago

I also found some last fall!

[-] [email protected] 24 points 6 months ago

Gah. Looks like forest floor rotting star fish.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago

It sure smelled like that. (;ŏ﹏ŏ)

[-] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

Appropriate name.

[-] [email protected] 17 points 6 months ago

Omg if I came across that while hiking in the woods without knowing what it was, I would probably hightail it out of there, all the while looking back to make sure it wasn't following me.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago

Don't worry, they have no sight or hearing. They can only sense fear.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

How did you not run away screaming? Is this fungus common knowledge? I've never seen it and I am happy to have read this post before stumbling on this another dimension opening strawberry-red nightmare

[-] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

xD I read a lot of books about nature when I was a kid and therefore knew of this fungus for some time. I always wanted to see this one, too: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrus_ruber

Damn, it's pretty wild that when a creature enters the affected area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, the creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 3d6 bludgeoning damage and be restrained by the tentacles.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

be restrained by the tentacles

As someone who's absolutely afraid/disgusted/horrified by octopus, these also need to be eradicated from this planet
