“Your honour, I will be representing myself today.”

Brian Mwenda walked free from court today after successfully winning his 27th court case in dramatic circumstances.

I know it's universally a bad idea, but I hope he represents himself.

Friend: "I thought you got your degree from Colombia." Lawyer: "apparently I need one from Kenya too!"

I would have hoped that the guy would have just gone to law school. There is a reason that certain professions require certain education. And if he is able to handle a court case, then he should also be able to pass law school.

Now, since he has a criminal history, he may not be able to ever become a lawyer, and has thrown all his skills under the bus.

Wonder why he did it. If there is some inequality in law school admissions in Kenya? And he did it out of spite?

I've met people who are wicked smart but couldn't pass a test. I've met people who got straight As, in the Honors Society, and was on the Dean's list who couldn't find their way out of a paper bag.

I'm not saying law school isn't important. But it could be that the guy did do law school and choked on the exams and decided to just practice law anyway.

Test taking is a skill like any other, but it also largely does not match the actual work experience you're likely to encounter on any job. Long-term projects would make more sense but are harder to grade, and schools seem to expect teachers to grade on their own time.

Hats off to the man.

We should part with institutions whose main role became fleecing students and makiing them slaves to debt while needlessly stretching curriculums to milk the cow dry. I have gone through 5 years of college and I can say It could have been compressed into 2.5 years and finished with the same knowledge and less burnout
