Most Americans when you point this out, they completely glaze over the passive costs of car ownership (maintenance, insurance, registration, gas, parking, etc all) and immediately look at the numbers of car financing

Okay, dick, I didn't ask, and if true, so what? Most Americans still finance their purchases, 80% for new and 53% for used auto sales. So most cars you see barreling down stroads have a lienholder.

I love giant ugly vehicles all usually seating one or two people (despite potential capacity to sit 4/5) driving in the same direction for miles but each operated individually to perform the same tasks (causing tens of thousands of deaths). weird thing I saw that's absolutely fucked, I opened the youtube website from a non-logged-in browser this morning. Every single recommended video had to do with cars in some way. Video of a guy going wild inside his car. Video of a cop doing some Tactical Vehicular Maneuvering. Video of a car being hit by a train. Video of protesters blocking traffic. And so on and so on. It really sent me for a loop, made it seem like cars were some inextricable part of the human body or something.
