Taking on five-figures of debt in order to leave your house

Stuck in a mile-long queue of vehicles all trying to squeeze from an eight-lane highway down to a one-lane exit ramp.

Gassing myself on fumes every time I enter a tunnel.

Gunning it to 80mph when my vehicle can only safely be operated at 40-60mph, depending on the skill and focus of the driver.

Playing an escalating game chicken as you keep buying larger and larger vehicles to feel safe.

What's not to love?

there's something deeply soulless and cowardly about the way The Economist doesn't have bylines / author credit

That's to give themselves illusion of editorial popularity for all I know... they know how ghoulish they are ... they can speak for themselves...

Yes because a lifetime commitment to oil corporations is "freedom"

I sure love the freedom of being financially strapped to a couch on wheels!

Most Americans when you point this out, they completely glaze over the passive costs of car ownership (maintenance, insurance, registration, gas, parking, etc all) and immediately look at the numbers of car financing

smuglord : "whahahahaha I didn't finance my car you chump!"

Okay, dick, I didn't ask, and if true, so what? Most Americans still finance their purchases, 80% for new and 53% for used auto sales. So most cars you see barreling down stroads have a lienholder.

I love giant ugly vehicles all usually seating one or two people (despite potential capacity to sit 4/5) driving in the same direction for miles but each operated individually to perform the same tasks (causing tens of thousands of deaths). You want to take away our freedom to conform to brainless residential planning? Good luck with that. GOD bless AmeriCAR!!!

weird thing I saw that's absolutely fucked, I opened the youtube website from a non-logged-in browser this morning. Every single recommended video had to do with cars in some way. Video of a guy going wild inside his car. Video of a cop doing some Tactical Vehicular Maneuvering. Video of a car being hit by a train. Video of protesters blocking traffic. And so on and so on. It really sent me for a loop, made it seem like cars were some inextricable part of the human body or something.

Critical support to the videos of car being hit by train and protestors stopping cars.

If you'd look at the world from the outside, you'd think cars were the dominant species
