That looks slippery as hell.

Now imagine it in a pair of these bad boys

Probably not too bad. There are steps, it's not a slope.

I’ve been there in the rain. It is that bad. Being steps somehow makes it worse.

I could definitely live there.

Kyoto is a magical city, rain or shine

I been there. It's tourist hell.

Oh no! It looks so peaceful and serene.

I feel sorry for the local residents

What are those buildings, any idea? Businesses? Houses? I see what look like signs out front, but can’t tell what for. Idle curiosity.

This is a touristy street that leads up to a temple. Those shops are mostly peddling knick knacks, ice cream, etc.

Gotcha. Starbucks, now with atmosphere!

Funny thing you should say that because IIRC there actually is a Starbucks on the left right around the corner (though with a traditional facade at least). Source: wife and I were there last year.

Kyoto has SUPER strict laws around building appearances. They absolutely do not want corporations coming in and fucking up the vibe.

One more reason to love Kyoto ❤️

As far as I know, a lot of these are small businesses. Mom and pop shops.
