No post yesterday and nothing for any Communities on lemmy.world today (looks kinda interesting without it though).

The dev at lemmyverse.net had to disable crawls of the site due to issues with its API responses.

There's activity on the lemmyverse github, but I couldn't tell you what it means (whether it just means we got data for today, or whether lemmy.world communities will start appearing again).

He did have to, at least temporarily. I had a conversation with him about it. Lemmy.world's API response was completely busted ever since the Sync influx of users :/

I think it’s a double edged sword. Yes, more users are joining but having Sync position lemmy.world as the “default” instance is exceptionally problematic and I’m very uneasy with the way that lemmy.world is willingly leaning into that. It feels like it’s risking centralization and is very harmful to give such a large server power over the lemmyverse.

They are making a point on their registration page encouraging people to spread out, but it still is… eeek.

I think easy onboarding is the most important factor at this point in time, and currently a necessary sacrifice seeing as discoverability and how the /All page works is a problem for new users if they sign to a tiny instance.

I think "getting the foot in the door" when it comes to getting people on here is most important, and once people are already here and have gained a small understanding of the Fediverse, they are more likely to be open to move to a smaller instance.

With Karma not being emphasized there should be less friction to change account, and migration tools for subscriptions are out there and will soon be integrated into 3rd party apps I'm sure.

Still, I think it would be good to start funneling new people onto lemm.ee, lemmy.sdf.org and lemmy.one instead of just .world.

I agree. I think it's already happening in the way mastodon did originally. I've already seen people migrating to smaller instances over time. I've had more than few people migrate over to mine as they see it matches their niche interests.

I agree with you, indeed it is not ideal. I guess that after a while users will spread to other instances, especially as DDoS attack will probably continue.
