“We must pass a ceasefire resolution. … We must join the growing chorus of voices saying ‘never again’—’never again’ for anyone.”

Great work by my colleague @gusbova, wrapping up efforts to pass a #ceasefire resolution in city councils across #Texas: https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-gaza-ceasefire-austin-dallas-houston-san-antonio?utm_campaign=mastodon

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] The term genocide is being horribly misused in reference to Israel's counteroffensive, reacting to the October 7 massacres. There is no systemic annihilation of the Palestinian people, otherwise the war would have been extended to the west bank, and many, many more Gazans would be dead. The IDF's mission is clear and limited. Collateral casualties are high due to Hamas hiding in civilian areas and not obeying established rules of war.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Lots of numbers being thrown around. I think we can all agree that deaths are tragic even if we don't agree on who is to blame. Israel's defensive actions lack any connection to genocide, in either intent or result. Look at data. The population of Gaza grew dramatically both under Israeli occupation and since Israeli withdrawal. Two years after the current conflict ends it will have probably recovered from the current losses. Your comment is appalling. People are not fungible tokens, 25 thousand births will not make 25 thousand murders Ok.

The demographic growth doesn't annul the fact that Palestinians where expelled from 78% of their country, nor the fact that there's ample reason to claim it's genocide from public statements alone.

Cutting water and electricity are also genocidal acts.

Denying the entry of humanitarian aid trucks is also a genocidal act.

No, @[email protected], they won't recover. The dead won't revive. The mutilated limbs won't regrow. The trauma won"t wash away. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] The only actor in this conflict attempting to kill an entire population simply for who they are is Hamas. They showed their intent on October 7 and vow to do it again as soon as they are able, killing Jews for being Jews. Unfortunately, any ceasefire without the total destruction of Hamas is simply a return to October 6: ceasefire with Hamas ruling Gaza and planning their next murders. (2/2)

That you claim there's no genocidal intent on Israel actions is groundless. There's ample evidence on the subject, from Netanyahu's Amalek references, to IDF soldiers chanting "there are no uninvolved civilians".

@[email protected] The term #genocide is aptly used in reference to the actions of #Israel. There's a systemic annihilation of the #Palestinian people, the genocide is present both in the #WestBank and in the Red Line. It's estimated that 5% of the population of #Gaza is dead, missing or under the rubble, and since the massacre is ongoing, then this number is going to become higher. The mission of the #IOF isn't limited. They've even killed hostages and civilians wearing white flags. 1/2 @[email protected]

The "we massacred 25+ thousands of people because #Hamas hides beneath them" is also false. The #IOF has destroyed more than 70% of all residences of #Gaza, as well as all hospitals. It's just mathematically impossible for a tiny fraction of the population to be hidden in the majority of the territory.
You're justifying #genocide , which makes you complicit in it.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] looking forward to this mathematical proof, but, until then, I'd direct your focus to the scope of context argued by South Africa. Surely you agree with the extent of that scope? Because it's very inline with what Arafat argued to Bill Clinton.

@nicholas_[email protected] According to Israel, there are 300 000 members of Hamas, less than 7% of all Gazans. If, supposedly, a residential building becomes a legitimate military target if there's a combatant (and note that not everyone in Hamas is) below it, that means that no more than 7% can become legal targets. Note that these are a lot of "if"s, and that not all Hamas combatants are gone, despite the bombings. @[email protected]

@[email protected] @[email protected] falls completely short of your claims, and ignores the question which was asked of you. Just on my phone at the moment, so a quick reply.
