The death of Zionism has just massively accelerated.

previous preamble

BRICS has expanded to include Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Argentina is currently experiencing technical difficulties due to the election of the ancap clown Milei - once he's out of office, maybe they can try again.

I don't really have much to say about this one way or another. BRICS has, so far, made only nervous and small steps towards challenging US hegemony. This isn't really that unexpected, as only China and Russia are the real "true believers" in ending US hegemony (and even then, China's government either believes, or is pretending to believe, that reconciliation is still possible). Brazil, India, and South Africa are less enthralled by the concept of dethroning the US, most especially India, who had to make a firm decision in 2023 whether they were going to be on the side of America, or on the side of the Global South, and chose the former, strengthening their military relationship. They're still best of friends with Russia, but they are very obviously the sussy imposter of the BRICS group.

The prospects of BRICS are only really loosely correlated with the prospects of multipolarism, though. It's not a process that hinges on BRICS's successes or failures. It is coming because the contender states (in Desai's terminology) are irreversibly rising, and the US is irreversibly falling. If it will not be BRICS that leads, it will be a different organization. A better world is not only possible, but inevitable - unfortunately for the US.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Mixed signals from US Congress on Biden air strikes

On the Democrat side, California representative Ro Khanna said: "The President needs to come to Congress before launching a strike against the Houthis in Yemen and involving us in another Middle East conflict. That is Article 1 of the Constitution. I will stand up for that regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican is in the White House."

I don't think the US has calculated how this looks to fence sitters on the Palestine issue.

The "both sides should get along" crowd are still part of the no-war crowd even if their stance is wishy washy. These attacks on Yemen demonstrate one thing and one thing only, that the US is more concerned with shipping lanes than actually alive human being in Gaza.

Framing it this way will flip more people to fully supporting Palestine, and more interestingly also opposing the US itself.

Lula, Petro, and Arab League declare support to South Africa’s case against Israel

Colombia and Brazil join a growing list of countries that has expressed support for South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide

Colombia and Brazil’s foreign ministries announced in separate statements that their governments support South Africa’s historic case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The two South American nations join a growing list of countries that have saluted South Africa’s initiative to demonstrate that Israel has violated its obligations under the Geneva Convention and oblige the state to cease all such acts.

Colombia’s foreign ministry wrote in a statement that “South Africa’s lawsuit is a brave step in the right direction.” It added that the government of Gustavo Petro hopes that “the Court will rule without delay on the request for the urgent provisional measures requested by South Africa and adopt decisions that will allow the bloodbath in Gaza and the occupied territories to cease.”

The statement also pointed out that Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, has sustained since Israel intensified its siege on Gaza, that, “it is very clear that the actions and measures adopted by the government of Israel constitute acts of genocide.”

Itamaraty announced the support of the Brazilian government in a statement following a meeting held between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Palestinian Ambassador in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben. The statement read: “In light of the flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, the president expressed his support for the initiative of South Africa to ask the International Court of Justice to determine that Israel immediately cease all acts and measures that could constitute genocide or related crimes in the terms of the Convention for the Prevention and Repression of Genocide Crime.”

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the Arab League, announced on the same day that “It is natural and logical for the Arab League to fully support the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing genocide. We look forward to a just and bold ruling that will stop this aggressive war and put an end to the shedding of Palestinian blood.”

The leader of the regional bloc added, “I express gratitude to South Africa and its government for adopting this principled stance, prioritizing morals and human values over any other considerations… and I reaffirm the Secretary General’s support for South Africa’s efforts in every possible manner.”

South Africa submitted the 84-page application on December 29, the 84th day of the Israel’s bombardment of the besieged Strip. In the document, South Africa emphasizes the obligation of all State Parties to the 1948 Convention to take “all reasonable measures within their power to prevent genocide”. As such, it has urged the Court to recognize that Israel has breached this obligation.

Citing Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, it argues, “The acts and omissions by Israel…are genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnic group.”

South Africa will present its arguments before 15 judges of the ICJ on January 11.

Israel, after supporting Bolsonaro and sending its diplomat to try to sabotage the Brazilian Air Force mission to rescue Brazilian-Palestinians from Gaza, really thought that Brazil would remain neutral?

We need Gustavo Petro emojis.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this so figured it may get some visibility here.

https://www.icc-cpi.int/news/icc-prosecutor-karim-aa-khan-kc-announces-launch-advanced-evidence-submission-platform-otplink

The ICC has opened up a portal for people to submit evidence of Israeli war crimes. Yes the ICC is a paper tiger and lib, but having internationally documented and recognized evidence of Israeli war crimes is a good thing. I know we have this thread documenting their war crimes but if there happen to be any Palestinians lurking here and/or witnesses to these crimes, this may be an opportunity for you to officially submit your evidence of Israeli war crimes.

I'm seeing some back and forth on Twitter about who can/should submit so I'm just deferring to what @JFAorg is urging on Twitter (just Palestinian families so as to not clog the submissions with wrong/ill-formatted data). But maybe that will change? Also, I don't know if Justice for All is a legit org.

Direct Submission Link on the ICC site: https://otplink.icc-cpi.int/

Video about submitting evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZjHgYto83s

Justice for All Submission Link: https://www.justiceforall.org/icc-submissions/

It should be noted that the ICC is different from ICJ (where South Africa is planning to submit a claim of genocide). AFAIK, ICC is people vs states and ICJ is states vs states. Anyone else have any thoughts or anything to add?

According to Israeli channel 12, the Israeli line of defense at the ICJ regarding the statements of Israeli officials about destroying Gaza, that were quoted in the appeal will be that: “Some of those quoted are not decision makers, the ones that are - didn’t mean what they said”

Your honour, the prime minister was being ironic

Source: Resistance News Network telegram.

Member of Ansarallah political bureau, Ali Al-Qahoum:

The battle will exceed the imagination and expectations of the Americans and the British.

The war is open, and the Americans and the British will regret their aggression and pay a high price.

The Yemeni Armed Forces are responding to the American and British warships in the Red Sea.

A fierce war in the Red Sea, and we targeted American and British military sites and bases.

Same source:

The American-British enemy aggression on Yemen targets Al-Dailami Air Base north of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, the vicinity of Hodeidah Airport, areas in the Zabid district, and the Kuhlan camp east of the city of Saada.

The American-British aggression on Yemen targeted the airport in the Abs District and the Taiz Airport in the Taiziyah District.

There were initial reports of a hit on an American ship in the Red Sea but I immediately did not believe this to be real, and it is seeming increasingly likely that it is indeed not real. Rumors about waves of missiles being fired by Yemen that I also have no idea if they are real or not, but am gradually siding on them not being real, or being overblown. Also rumors of attacks in Iraq that I have no idea about.

The only thing that we know for sure right now is that a) Western aircraft have bombed Yemen, and b) the Yemeni government is not particularly happy about that.

[–] [email protected] 61 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I'm sick of people claiming that Ansarallah is arbitrarily targeting ships in the Red Sea, but I don't have the energy to check every positive strike and check every boat that is still transiting the Red Sea.

The Yemeni Houthis are using Stinger MANPADS against American aircraft from nowhere. — TopWar Military Review

Tonight, the armed forces of the United States, Great Britain and several other countries began a military operation against the Ansar Allah movement operating in Yemen, better known as the Houthis. Weapons are being used against military targets in Yemen. aviation air forces of the USA and Great Britain. The Yemeni Houthi command has already reported at least two enemy military aircraft shot down. Thus, it is reported that the US Armed Forces F-22 fighter was destroyed and that one of the British fighters involved in striking Yemen was shot down. The Houthis have their own air defense system, which is armed with both Soviet-made air defense systems left over from the Yemeni army and anti-aircraft missile systems transferred from Iran. However, another interesting nuance of the new conflict is already known - the Houthis are actively using Stinger MANPADS from nowhere against American aircraft. Naturally, the United States or other Western countries could not supply Stingers to the Houthis. Iran certainly cannot have such MANPADS in large quantities. Accordingly, speculation arises that the Houthis could have purchased MANPADS on the global arms market on their own, and the sellers could have been either directly from the Ukrainian military, or from countries or structures that purchased Stinger MANPADS from the Ukrainian military and decided to resell them. So the Pentagon should monitor more closely the fate of the weapons supplied to Ukraine, lest they then start shooting at American soldiers.

I watched some of the coverage of Israel's defense and somehow I missed this one

A lawyer representing Israel, Christopher Staker, told ICJ judges the arguments about Gaza are similar to those made in the Bosnian genocide case but the court did not order an end to military activity then.

The Danish minister of finance has deviated from his usual austerity and announced that there is in fact a part of the public sector, outside of the police and the military, that the succdem-led right-wing government wants to spend more money on.

That is the monarchy.

Following tomorrow's change of monarch, the government is planning to increase funding for the royals. The reason given is that now they will need separate courts for both the queen emeritus, the new king and for his wife the queen-consort. It is also claimed that they need to spend more money on "communication". The poor things only receive USD 15 million a year today, in addition to having free use of a range of state-owned palaces, a royal yacht operated by the navy as well as the free use of military aircraft. Who can survive on that?

In addition to giving the royals more money the government is planning to assume more of their expenses by making the state responsible for paying the interior upkeep of state-owned palaces that has been carried out at the royals' expense until now.

In case you're wondering what those very special US military personnel that were photographed with Biden in Israel were doing, here are the first insights:

https://theintercept.com/2024/01/11/israel-air-force-targeting-intelligence/

TARGETING INTELLIGENCE — THE information used to conduct airstrikes and fire long-range artillery weapons — has played a central role in Israel’s siege of Gaza. A document obtained through the Freedom of Information Act suggests that the U.S. Air Force sent officers specializing in this exact form of intelligence to Israel in late November.

WASHINGTON/ADEN, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The United States carried out an additional strike against Yemen's Houthi forces on Friday, two officials told Reuters, after President Joe Biden's administration vowed to protect shipping in the Red Sea.

The latest strike, which one of the U.S. officials said targeted a radar site, came a day after dozens of U.S. and British strikes on the Iran-backed group's facilities.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, did not provide more details. Radar infrastructure has been a key target in the U.S. military effort to halt Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

The Red Sea attacks are throwing supply chains into chaos — but US oil exports appear to be benefiting from them

The ongoing attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi rebels are causing chaos for the world's supply chains — but American oil exports appear to be benefiting from them.

That's because international demand has shifted to ample US shale oil supply — which is the "safer and cheaper way to procure supply, especially for EU customers," Robert Yawger, the executive director for energy futures at Mizuho Securities USA, wrote in a note on Thursday, per MarketWatch.

Due to the attacks, many ships are rerouting from the Red Sea — which connects to the Suez Canal, a vital trade link between Asia and Europe — to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, but this makes journeys longer and more expensive.

So, many buyers appear to be simply purchasing oil from the US instead of the Middle East. US petroleum exports rose by 35% on-week to nearly 5.3 million barrels a day for the week ended December 29, according to the US Energy Information Administration. This is the first time US exports have spiked since the Houthi started their Red Sea attacks in mid November.

Yawger expects US petroleum exports to hold above the 5 million barrels a day level in the coming weeks amid intensifying geopolitical tensions.

The US has spearheaded a multinational operation to protect shipping lanes around the Red Sea, but many shipping companies are still avoiding the region and are warning of major disruptions to their schedules.

For oil consumers at least, there's a simple solution to the problem, wrote Yawger.

"Forget about the Houthis/Iranian menace in the Red Sea," he wrote. "You don't need a US Navy escort from danger — just a nice, clean two- to- four-week round-trip journey to the US."

Interesting, so now europe is even more dependent on the US than before
