I was a minister of religion for seventeen years and absolutely loved working with kids. I volunteered in a couple of programs at my kid’s school, and their teacher told me I was in the wrong job. She had a good point—the parts of the job I most enjoyed either involved kids or teaching groups of people.
When it came time to change careers, teaching was the obvious choice. My child’s former teacher (who was now a principal) gave me a job as an SSO while I did my degree.
As a postscript, someone associated with one of the programs I’d volunteered in rang me when a teaching role opened up and I was made permanent within a year.
