The dox is a great read on how they did it. . Lots to learn how NOT to erase yourself from the internet. Basically, don't spill yourself online, don't reuse names, don't use your real name ever.
If you want to skip MOST of the bad crap or just want the details of what they did: ctrl + f "Joining The Dots" on the accollective link in the OP.
Some key parts: Followed a BBQ place on both twitter accounts Mentioned he was at an 8chan event in New York on reddit. Was in a gab leak and used his first intial last name email Reused some bitcoin forum username to promote his comic on reddit Reused even more accounts for reddit and twitter (and boosted his comics with them) confirming the link. Did some weird shit that makes it incredibly obvious his name is "important" like: Remove his name from random obits, claim a bunch of websites with his firstname/lastname email, have his house censored on google, and botch some scrubbing.
Not related to the dox per-say but: Worked for a soy company in Nebraska and got 23 bitcoins stolen.
I feel like I do a pretty good job of preventing my own doxxing but damn, reading through this breakdown makes me feel like it's a nearly impossible task if you're online long enough
Browser finger printing, SNI leakage, and unencrypted DNS all contribute to you being found out by any dedicated threat actor.
Also the feds/anyone in the Five Eyes security apparatus all know who we are regardless because they control the internet infrastructure lol
Any way we can incorporate these brave soldiers into a digital Red Army?
I'm not sure how SNI or unencrypted DNS is going to be a threat from anyone but government or corporate spies, your average internet doxxing is not going to include MITMing. Browser fingerprinting will be somewhat of a deal if you can at least make the target visit your website(s).
genuinely ouch, that would be lifechanging money for me (if I could sell them which I know is harder than it sounds).
Reminds me of the reddit guy who moderated all of the now-blacklisted subreddits from the early days, who showed up to a meetup with like twenty people and ten years later got doxxed because of it.
