If god created humans, then anything that humans do is technically god's fault... isn't it?

[-] [email protected] 31 points 1 year ago

Nah, that's Section 230 where the creator isn't responsible for what its users do.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago

Nah, they have that covered with the free will clause.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago

Or it's the work of Satan, who doesn't actually have free will, but get to do evil things because otherwise you'd be blaming god for killing a bunch of people. Although, in the one place where Satan is doing things in the bible, it's god that does all the killing.

god kills Job's family so that he can brag to Satan about how much Job loves him.

This is always my reply, like, so if this theoretical "sky-daddy" knew everything, and created us, then we were created with the knowledge that our creation would cause untold suffering.

I see 3 possibilities:

  1. there is no god and everything is just random

  2. god is cruel, we are the ants under the proverbial magnifying glass

  3. "god" are actually just aliens and we were "created" as a genetic experiment by other beings that visited earth long ago.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

no no don't you see that's a facile argument? sky daddy gave us free will to do evil so we had to choose him because... that is... because there... uhm

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Free will to do exactly what he says or go straight to Hell where you will be tortured for eternity.

So as someone who read the bible quite a lot when he was still Catholic - Humanity gets knowledge of Good an Evil by eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Before then, there were no evil acts - that's why it is called the Original Sin.

Like I get what you're going for but if you're going to try to parody actual religious claims you should know the basics.

I'm a former catholic, and therefore did not need to read the bible ;). I wasn't attempting a proper debate with apologetics etc. just a tongue-in-cheek comment. Catholics would actually indeed view this as a facile argument because it has been debated for centuries. It's still a fair point, ie that an omnipotent god who already knows the outcome of your free will should still make you choose. There are many well-reasoned responses to this, but at the core of it, you must still rely on "faith" rather than anything empirical. I'm what you'd call a "doubting thomas"

God gave humans free will which he apparently doesn’t control. Doesn’t explain natural disasters though. I think they’re meant to test our faith or something? Catholic school was a loooong time ago.

Posting guidelines.

All posts in this community have come from elsewhere, it is not original content, the poster in this community is not OP. The person who posts in this community isn’t necessarily endorsing whatever the post is talking about and they are not looking to argue with you about the content in the post.

You are welcome to discuss and debate any topic but arguments are not welcome here. I consider debate/discussions to be civil; people with different opinions participating in respectful conversations. It becomes an argument as soon as someone becomes aggressive, nasty, insulting or just plain unpleasant. Report argumentative comments, then ignore them.

There is currently no rule about how recent a post needs to be because the community is about the comeback part, not the topic.

Rules:

• Be civil and remember the human.

• No trolling, insults or name calling. Swearing in general is fine, but not to insult someone.

• No bigotry of any kind, including homophobia, transphobia, sexism and racism.

• Try not to get too political. A lot of these posts will involve politics, but this isn’t the place for political arguments.

• Participate in good faith - don’t be aggressive and don’t argue for arguements sake.

• Mark NSFW posts if they contain nudity.

• Satire is allowed but please start the post title with [satire] so other users can filter it out if they’d like.

This community follows the rules of the lemmy.world instance and the lemmy.org code of conduct. I’ve summarised them here:

  1. Be civil, remember the human.
  2. No insulting or harassing other members. That includes name calling.
  3. Respect differences of opinion. Civil discussion/debate is fine, arguing is not. Criticise ideas, not people.
  4. Keep unrequested/unstructured critique to a minimum.
  5. Remember we have all chosen to be here voluntarily. Respect the spent time and effort people have spent creating posts in order to share something they find amusing with you.
  6. Swearing in general is fine, swearing to insult another commenter isn’t.
  7. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia or any other type of bigotry.
  8. No incitement of violence or promotion of violent ideologies.
