The fact that the biggest star trek sub on reddit has been censored to a degree that it drove away many trekkies might also be one of the reasons. I got a lifetime ban there simply for stating that I do not like DIS and PIC because in my opinion they oppose everything star trek stands for.
Really? I was banned for a similar reason.
Someone asked the question on that sub, "Why do people hate on Discovery". And I answered.
I wasn't edgy. I wasn't trying to insult. I explained, I gave definitions, I made examples. Apparently the moderator wanted my post to be censored because I wasn't being "honest and truthful with myself" and used words and terms that weren't allowed, such as "Mary Sue".
I quoted Drumhead.
The mod really didn't like that.
Lol.
Sounds pretty similar to my experience. It really felt like CBS was paying the mods to make sure nobody could express critique.
You know we're talking about the Star Trek subreddit, right? Not Lemmy?
Also, what I wrote about happened at least 3 years ago, so well before I even heard of Lemmy.
Lastly, I never even realised that comment you're referring to was removed until now. Mildly sad about it, but not important.
By the way, Hello Stamets person thing! You have a bit of a reputation for being an STD shill, it seems. If the comments about you are to believed, at least. Do you run your Star Trek server in a similar fashion as the one on Reddit?
Lemmy isn't much better. The mod Stamets loves DIS so you better not criticize it. I assume he was the reddit mod.
Please tell me you´re joking, I thought Stamets was cool.
I was arguing with him that Disco wasn't great, didn't know who he was, and looked at his history. I stopped arguing once I saw him banning for arguing against him.
Yikes! If that´s true it is clearly abuse of mod powers to suppress other peoples legitimate opinions and no amount of memes can make up for that ...
Well don't worry because it isn't true. @[email protected] has made this blatant lie several times across Lemmy now.
There is exactly one instance in which he and I ever talked with one another. This is that comment thread. There are a few very important things to note.
First is that Blue_Morpho was the one who was antagonistic throughout the entire interaction. Second is that I am the one who broke off the argument and left while Blue_Morpho doubled down on the discussion and kept arguing. Third is that it was on Risa, a community I have never been a moderator of. Third is that this was made over 20 days ago which is well before I even created my new community, StarTrekMemes.
Every single thing that Blue Morpho said to you was a complete lie. He doesn't like me so he's slandering me and trying to make me seem like a power hungry moderator when infact he's an antagonistic troll who can't let shit go from a month ago.
Don´t worry, there´s a reason I started my last comment with If that´s true .... I also checked modlog and could not find anything that confirmed the accusation. As long as you won´t bind me to a chair, stick matches between my eyelids and force me to watch DIS instead of my beloved DS9, we are cool :)
Of course not. I don't care if someone doesn't like Discovery. I just don't like it when people are aggressively and needlessly insulting to it. If people phrase their opinion without attacking people who like it, or the show itself, then I really don't care. Say how much you think it fucking sucks all you want. It means I probably won't interact with that person as much personally but it's their opinion. It's their right. Honestly I cannot stand DS9 at all for a decently sized list of reasons. Do I expected to be downvoted whenever I voice that? Sure. But I don't expect to be removed. I share the same courtesy to people who dislike the thing I like.
That´s a very reasonable approach in my opinion. Everyone should be free to like or dislike whatever they want for their personal reasons and that is never a reason to downvote, be unkind, turn aggressive or even get banned. In my perception a lot of that kind of unnecessary negativity was typical for -and left behind on- reddit. That´s one of the main reasons I became less defensive and more positive in my communication and never looked back after leaving reddit myself. It´s only natural that different people like different things, why fight about it?
I wish more people would think that way, and btw watch out to not get a carpal tunnel syndrome from posting those unreal amounts of memes!
I'm pretty sure what he doesn't like is people just dumping on it, which makes sense because we're not hanging out in a place to dump on star trek. Discussion is another thing entirely.
Personally, I think it had a lot of problems to begin with, and i'm glad they soldiered on through at least for the Spock season because damn did it give our older characters a lot more depth. You know, the depth that you feel in them but wasn't explicitly there? Makes Spock's internal struggles and relationships make so much more sense, and sets Pike up perfectly as the absolute idol of all the captains we've seen. Like they're trying to live up to him, each in their own way, but none of them have really gotten to know the guy. Recontextualized the whole thing for me, in a good way. Lots to think about.
Anyway, i've talked with him about that stuff, and some of the problems with it and that's the impression I got.
From what I've seen of Lower Decks I really dig it and it seems to fit in quite nicely IMO
That's the only new Trek show I've seen since DS9
The new Trek movies were pretty meh IMO
honestly, y'all should both give strange new worlds a shot. to me they're the closest we've ever gotten to TOS. even moreso than TNG. and i agree that the other new treks were ass.
Agreed. I was soooo doubtful about SNW after discovery. Picard season 3 was fantastic, but the first two seasons were hot garbage
Sorry for being imprecise, I specifically meant DIS and PIC. However, SNW I found to be pretty good and I agree it has a certain TOS feel to it! (except the musical episode, which was quite bad imo)
I've heard good things about strange new worlds and I've been meaning to check it out
Sorry for being imprecise, I specifically meant DIS and PIC. However, I can´t stand how fast they talk in LD, sadly that makes it pretty unwatchable for me.
I almost hate to break this to you...
So the r/StarTrek mods, who banned people simply for having a different opinion on certain shows, are moderating here now? That would be seriously fucked up. I thought we left them on reddit for good.
Careful, there's a mod named Stamets here that will ban you for not loving Disco. He was probably the reddit mod too.
Stamets? Never heard of him ... /s
