Nope, far too tightly integrated for you.
I've heard there are some launchers, removing telemetry, why too tightly? π
You're not even going to get to the point where you can side load anything without installing their phone app and binding your crap to a Facebook account. Every other firmware update every store purchase it's all tied back to them.
Once you've completely and thoroughly tied it to them You can then go back and throw some sideloading stuff on it, change out the launchers and stuff like that. But every time they change anything you're right back where you were. They're very much trying to make it a wild garden without alienating everyone. Every time the wind changes direction and their project management team, You're going to have to unblock all of your DNS and let the thing call home so you can continue to use it.
This sounds really sad π
So what are my options, I actually would like to buy a second hand head set, not sure how they would detach their account
I can do a lot of tricks and hacks, but as you're saying it seems nothing would help
So, a better option would to just choose another headset? π€
It's kind of a shit sandwich right? The only reason the quest is so cheap and advanced is because Facebook is sinking container ships of money into the project expecting an eventual return on investment when they own the VR internet.
I picked my headset up of after not using for 3 months, it immediately did a firmware update, then made me re-link it. I had to re-install the meta app on my phone. I wouldn't be shocked if they just stop working eventually if they can't call home. They're also tolerating sideloading at the moment. you can't count on that being a permanent thing.
You could do a Vive XR. It's pricier and has a smaller store and is missing some of the extra tracking features but it would get the job done, it has a nice display too. The other option would be using a Valve Index and a PC. The games look and work better off real hardware.
Alternatively, you could unlock your unit from Facebook jail, set up a Facebook account just for quest usage. wipe an old phone and dedicate it to quest usage. They can't stop you from using a barely used account to operate the quest.
Shit sandwich indeed, it sounds really dystopian
Give XR is previous gen compared to quest 3
I think i'm going to wait for pico 5, or anything else new πΆβπ«οΈ
