Chief among the Japanese military’s concerns is a Chinese attack on neighboring Taiwan that could spark a wider conflict, with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warning that Ukraine today could be East Asia tomorrow.

aside from the obvious geopolitical tensions between japan, china, taiwan, and everyone else in the area, there's the historical importance of japan taking a military footing for the first time since WWII. furthermore - for the first time, like, ever - they're moving military assets into foreign territory to shore up defenses as friendly neighbors rather than fascist imperial overlords or conquerors.

i think that's noteworthy.
