Why YSK this is that when I was 13 I saw a YouTube video (back in the wee early days) and I saw this experiment where two people put a grape in the microwave, in a jar. Well, I thought that it was cool, so I did it myself. And that's when it got bad. I put an entire grapevine in the microwave with no jar to encase them and wouldn't you believe it, instead of a fire it just made a really sticky and slimy mess.🤢 Would not recommend -1/10

Why YSK: right now, Lemmy's autocomplete for the !community syntax isn't working correctly.

It will appear to work, like so:

But the link produced will redirect you away from your home instance and leave you unable to vote/subscribe...

To fix this issue, you'll need to manually edit the autocompleted link like so:

BAD LINK: [[email protected]](https://lemmy.world/c/youshouldknow)

⬇️⬇️⬇️ Remove the domain (i.e.: https://lemmy.world) & append the @ identifier (i.e.: @lemmy.world)

GOOD LINK: [[email protected]](/c/[email protected])

Removing the domain like this transforms it into a local link which prevents the instance redirection. Doing this will make it easier for newcomers to join your community and participate in discussions!

Those interested can monitor Github issues #369 & #1048 for when this UI bug is fixed!

Why YSK is to prevent your shoes from coming untied, creating a tripping hazard (plus it looks better).

It’s 1900s, not 1900’s. You only use an apostrophe when you’re omitting the first two digits: ‘90s, not 90’s or ‘90’s.

Why YSK: It’s an incredibly common error and can detract from academic writing as it is factually incorrect punctuation.

Why YSK: Back in 2020 when Australia had our massive wildfires I still had to drive to work everyday in the smoke. I also went and got my car serviced around the same time and they showed me how dark my cars air filters had gotten after just a few weeks of those conditions. The air filters in cars aren't designed to filter out so many particles so as soon as you can you should get them replaced.

Why YSK: ERs are there to quickly and efficiently find emergencies and treat them. If no emergency is found then their job is done. It is the patients' job to follow-up with their primary care or specialist for a more in depth workup should their symptoms warrant that.

I'll give a quick example. A patient presents to the ER for abdominal pain for 3 months. They get basic labs drawn and receive an abdominal CT scan and all that's found in the report is "moderate retained stool" and "no evidence for obstruction or appendicitis". The patient will be discharged. Even if the patient follows their instructions to start Miralax and drink more fluids and this does not help their pain, the ER did not fail that patient. Again the patient must adequately follow up with their doctor. At these subsequent, outpatient appointments their providers may order additional bloodwork tests not performed in the ER to hone in on a more specific diagnosis.

Why YSK: People seem to, on average, think that a car takes a lot of fuel to start up. In reality, it takes on the order of a few millilitres of fuel to start an engine. That means if your car isn't equipped with an automatic start/stop system to stop your engine instead of idling, it saves fuel to turn off your engine and start it back up when you need it.

Caveat: air conditioning and radio might not work with the engine turned off.

Scenarios where this might be useful include waiting for trains to pass at rail crossings, waiting for food at drive-throughs, dropping off or picking people up on the side of the road when they need to load stuff, etc. May not be a good idea to use this while waiting at a red light because starting the engine does take time which would annoy drivers behind you when the light turns green.

Some cars are equipped with systems that will automatically stop the engine when you are idling for a while (e.g. waiting for a red light). If yours is, then manually turning off your engine will probably result in reduced fuel savings compared to just relying on the car to do it for you.

Why YSK?

The first person who typed "should of" probably heard of it in real life that was meant to be "should've", they typed "should of" online and readers thought that it's grammatically correct to say "should of" which is in fact wrong and it became widespread throughout the years on Reddit.

I hope something could start to change.

I was getting annoyed that the default view is always local posts with Active, and found out that you can change the defaults in the settings! Just don't forget to hit save like I did.

Why YSK: Most people are generally pretty good at having their engine oil changed. It comes up somewhat frequently and most people understand that not doing it on time can mean costly engine repairs.

You know what's just important to the proper function of your car, requires routine maintenance, and is also expensive to repair? Your transmission!

Newer cars are much better at telling you or the service shop what needs to be done to the car, and a service shop can read a code and tell the car needs the transmission fluid swapped. Dropping that $100+ extra needed cost on a customer can freak them out a bit, especially if they only went in thinking they were getting a $50 oil change.

As a car owner, know your service intervals! You should find it in the manual, but you can look online, too. In most cases, transmission fluid should be changed every 20,000-50,000 miles, depending on what you're driving and how you're driving it. If your drives are mostly short drives, your fluid will need more frequent changes. If you're not sure, do it every 30,000, and you'll be pretty safe. Once your transmission fluid has darkened, it loses its lubrication and heat dissipation properties. Excess heat and friction kills transmissions. Additionally, your transmission is filled with tiny parts and valves, and clumps of dirt and gunk in the transmission fluid can gather and settle on these parts and valves. Replacing your fluid regularly will keep this buildup from happening, extending the life of your transmission.

But if your car has 100,000 miles on it, and the fluid has never been changed, do not have the fluid changed and definitely do not have it flushed. If you've driven several tens of thousands of miles and never had that fluid changed, you're now dealing with stable chaos. There is likely already gunk settled in places it shouldn't be, but if the transmission is working fine at this stage, replacing the fluid will break some of that stuff free, and then you can run into problems faster than if you hadn't changed it at all. You can have rough or delayed shifts. You might even lose gears. At this point, your car is the equivalent of a paper cup. Use it for as long as you can, then get rid of it.

A transmission fluid change or flush can be $100-200 so knowing your intervals will help you plan for the expense. A whole transmission can be well over $1,000 before the labor costs. All in, you could be looking at spending at least $2,500 for the job, at which point, you might as well buy a newer car. A transmission fluid change is so infrequent, too. Most people will need it done to their cars no more than 2 or 3 times before they get into something newer.

Save yourself or the next person to own your car the heartbreak and keep this oft overlooked piece of machinery maintained.

Why YSK: With minimal friction to your purchasing process you can find hidden discounts (sometimes big ones!) for items online or through app purchases.

Especially for larger items you are purchasing online. After going through the entire process of purchasing an item and then stopping just before the "Complete/Place Order" button sometimes will trigger marketing to reach out with bigger discounts.

Same goes for some app subscriptions. If you plan on upgrading an app, while inside the app, sometimes dismissing the first price or offer will trigger a better discounted offer.

Because they don't get listed by browse.feddit.de you'll want to browse https://kbin.social/magazines to browse "magazines", which is what they call communities

e.g. [email protected]

or directly, https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration

Why YSK: Federation literally just synched up thanks to the tireless efforts by @[email protected] over the past few days.

So say I make an account on lemmy.world and post a bunch of stupid comments around other instances then decide to delete my account because I'm ashamed of them. After I delete my account, a copy of all those comments I made on other instances remain on those instances as a "shadow copy." There isn't any way to actually delete them all. The copies of the comments/posts on your home instance will be deleted

tldr: Don't say stupid shit on other instances you'll regret later! They never leave that instance!

Why YSK: so you can think carefully about what to comment and post.

I migrated from beehaw. You can see my previous post history here: [email protected]

Why YSK: Because you may delete your account and find your comments and other content is restored and beyond your control.

DO NOT DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT YET.

Keep overwriting your comments over and over so they cannot just roll them back a single edit.

I prefer Power Delete Suite as it does not need authorization and just uses the website through your own browser. I will continue to overwrite my comments on repeat until the API changes.

Many English speakers apply what is known as a "hyperforeignism" to the Spanish word habanero, using an ñ to mimic other Spanish words like "jalapeño". This is not correct though, as "habanero" is named for the Cuban city Habana (or Havana in English).

For context, if you are shy or uncomfortable having your pictures taken, please reconsider! My uncle passed away due to cancer a few years ago and we realized that he didn't like his pictures taken.... So now all we have to remember him by are a handful of pictures.

You know all those "easy" 4 week weight loss plans from weight watchers or others?

They don't offer an long time solution for weight loss.

Why YSK; It is a money pit and starting a healthy diet is way cheaper and better in the long run.

PS: I don't know if this is the correct format ;).

Why YSK: No matter how many times you try with English at certain times it may not go through. It can save you time by just not selecting a language the second try.

Why YSK: Sometimes devices crash in such a way that you can't turn them off and there is no reset button. This works with headphones, Bluetooth speakers and other small battery-powered devices. If the power button doesn't do anything, try plugging it into the charger and that will often fix it.

Navigate your phone settings and first go to about phone. From there go to software information. You should see your build number. Tap the build number several times in a row and developer options will be unlocked. This gives you access to developer options and a whole new set of customization features

If you're injured or ill but it's not life or limb threatening and you decide to call an ambulance thinking it'll be faster and you'll be seen first... WRONG. Ambulance crews very frequently will advise the hospital staff that you "can wait". Then we'll plop you into a wheel chair and push you into the waiting room with everyone else.
