I tried al kinds of ways to make nordvpn work properly on ubuntu and debian. and it does not. It does not start, t crashes, and or does not wnat to connect. Unless I use the (Ubuntu) snap version. What's up with that? Too many Ubuntu developers interfering in the development of Nordvpn or am I paranoid? And don't explain about .debs or settings please, I have been using Nordvpn for years.

I just would like to know what is going on?

Bonjour,

I’m trying to get Ubuntu on my Huawei windows laptop and I formatted the drive and waited 30 minutes for it to flash, and then I get spammed with popups that I have to format it and I can’t open the drive. When I press format, it says I don’t have write access. Wtf did it do to my drive I’m locked out. Is this a virus or an OS 🤔 It’s showing F:/ and E:/ now not just the E:/ drive. And i tried restarting, no installation screen

I switched the experimental HDR support on in my ubuntu 24.10. But the screen became so dull. How to solve this.If I can't, then how to go back. I switched it on using

  1. press Alt+F2
  2. input lg
  3. input global.compositor.backend.get_monitor_manager().experimental_hdr = 'on'

Hello I have a fresh install of virtualbox 24.04 installed on a recently updated 24.04 ubuntu from 22.10. I was trying to install the guest additions on a newly set up virtual device, and when I click on "insert guest additions CD" I'm told it is not downloaded, and to click to DL, so I do, and when I do it pops a screen that says it is downloaded (status bar says 100%) but if you click the sort button another bar appears that says 0%. There's no next steps or anything, clicking anything clickable closes the sidebar, but then trying to insert the CD starts the cycle again. Is there another step I'm missing?

Thanks!

Do you miss netselect?

Yeah me too.A lot.

Other Distros have tools to select the fastest mirror... Debian has netselect-apt, Arch has reflector, i could go on but why wollow in sadness?

Instead, i did a thing! -> mirrorselect

How is this different from other tools?

  1. The built-in mirror optimization requires a desktop environment. This doesn't.
  2. netselect-apt isn't available on Ubuntu anymore. Yeah you can get the deb and install it, but its broken anyway.
  3. The Ubuntu mirror service:
    1. Doesn't return the same information every time its called
    2. Only tells half the story (the half their server can see).

But, importantly, mirrorselect does a few things that other tools aren't doing:

  • Testing TCP latency through an HTTP HEAD request, including the responsiveness of the HTTP server.
    • Traditional ICMP/Ping testing doesn't do this.
  • Actual download speed testing.
    • (IKR? Crazy that one would use download speed as a key metric to evaluate download speed. For some reason other tools don't actually do this).
  • Automatic Country Selection (If you're lazy)
  • Manual Country Selection (If you love privacy)
  • Multi-stage ranking process: First TCP latency, then download speed.

You can find it here:

Hi everyone! I was hired as a web dev a couple months ago, and I’ve been using Ubuntu on an encrypted work drive, booting on my main rig. I know in terms of mobile workstations, many people prefer to do development and programming on Macbooks, but I was wondering if anyone knew how responsive Surface Pros are to installing/running Ubuntu. I’ve run my boot drive on my surface pro 7, but the laptop is a bit too underpowered to do any development. I’ve been eyeing a new Surface Pro 11 32Gb in favor of a Macbook pro, but the reason I’m asking is because of the Snapdragon NPU that come with them. I’ve heard Ubuntu is working with Qualcomm to improve support for the Snapdragons, but I’m a bit of a noob and don’t exactly know what I’d be in for.

TLDR; Ubuntu on a Snapdragon NPU a decent idea? And furthermore, on a Surface Pro 11?

Edit: If there is a better place to ask this question or if this post doesn’t belong here, please let me know

I recently began my Linux adventure and installed Ubuntu on my ThinkPad X230. Is this (link) something to be worried about, and what can I do? I tried enabling Secure Boot in BIOS but the OS wouldn't boot. My drive is encrypted, idk if that matters.

I was rebuilding an old iMac for my wife and did a minimal install of Lubuntu. This resulted in a minimal Ubuntu install with snapd purged! It does want to reinstall snapd when I went to install Firefox, but for now I installed Firefox and Chrome flatpaks. I blocked snapd from being reinstalled.

Reg. GnuPG

Reporting to Ubuntu cause 24.04 was released with ISO checksums a verification of which is not possible in clear way - ambiguous status of keyserver command option, heavy discrepancy.

Need to add keyserver to dirmngr.conf. GnuPG got preinstalled with Linux distribution. Latter one got installed to host few hours ago. GnuPG manual wants myself no more be using command line option to specify keyserver a public key of interest to be grabbed from. Instead myself should place server address to dirmngr.conf - so the manual.

~/.gnupg is however not existent on this system.

I learned then about the existence of addgnupghome tool. Due to this tool myself doesn't hesitate to create mentioned config file on my own. I can only start the file blank and add the one needed setting. Unsure if this is the proper way. On another hand tool addgnupghome can't accomplish its task as the .gnupg tree skeleton can't be found in /etc/.gnupg.

Distro is WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04. I wonder if wsl Ubuntu 24.04 may deviate from Canonical 24.04 build at this point. May the lack of skeleton tree have its origin in building 24.04 for WSL, rather than in Canonical labs?

How to fix it?

apt-get install --reinstall gnupg didn't help.

EDIT Identical problem occurs in an Arch-Linux-derivative distro: addgnupghome can find .gnupg skeleton tree. Hence, problem is neither WSL-, nor Ubuntu specific - .gnupg skeleton tree not found by addgnupghome tool.

Hi, I'm very new to Ubuntu and I'm attempting to write js code. However the dead keys, specifically the backtick (or the grave-key) which I especially need is not working.

I'm on Ubuntu 22.04.5. The backtick is shown in my default german keyboard layout, however neither the backtick nor the tilde key work. I tried switching to English (US, intl. with dead keys) but it didn't help.

I've been searching for hours now, but couldn't find anything that would resolve this problem for me.

Is this a known issue? Is there some sort of fix for this? I would appreciate any advice.

Hello, I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 and I would like to install Ubuntu to be able to reuse it, but unfortunately the installation crashes.

Here's what I did: I created a bootable Ubuntu key with the built-in tool in Ubuntu using another PC

I turned on my Mac by pressing alt and chosen my key

This message is displayed : Error : file 'boot' not found.

But you continue normally the loading screen with 20 years of Ubuntu is displayed

The startup sound starts on a black screen during the sound I can still move my mouse but a few seconds later everything crash

Sorry for my bad English if you don't understand what I say don't hesitate to ask for more information

Hi everybody I'm kind of newbie to changing audio drivers in linux.

My laptop runs on Ubuntu Studio 20.04, Xcfe desktop. Tried to install Pipewire to see if I could solve some compatibility problems between Pulse and Jack, but couldn't make Pipewire run properly.

Then I tried to go back to my previous configuration but now I can't make Jack work. Only pulse is running. Jack can't seem to get started, and when I open QJackCtl there is no way to configure it or making it start.

I need Jack for some applications, so I would be most than interested in running Jack again, and also the bridgin between Pulse and Jack that comes by default in Ubuntu Studio 20.04.

Does anyone have any idea on how could I enable again Jack? The other option is to reinstall Ubuntu (or install a newer version) but this would a pain in the ass. Any help is welcome <3

It came with Windows 11 Ryzen 3 and 8GB ram. I made bootable USB using Rufus, it works fine on my desktop. But on this laptop.. the installer just closes itself... Doesn't even open and when it does it just closes on its own in the middle of the steps.. so annoying

I booted earlier today and couldn't get past the issue. I still have 1.2GB of storage, so that wasn't the problem.

Started cups.service - CUPS Scheduler. Hold until boot process finishes up...nap application docker.nvidia-container-toolkit.

Want to verify text file with two Ubuntu-ISO checksums stored. Signer's public still not in local keyring as the used WSL2 Ubuntu 24.04 was installed from scratch. GnuPG means --keyserver to be deprecated. dirmngr.conf shall be used instead. However as for used Ubuntu 24.04 WSL (no updates are pending) the search for this file completes with zero matches find / -type f -name dirmngr.conf 2>/dev/null

All similar matches are found in /var/lib/ and /usr/bin/ /usr/lib/ folder trees. No single match in /etc/ and user home folder trees.

How to handle in above situation?

For ISO certification and installing scrut, my company requires me to enable hdd encryption on ubuntu laptop. But they're asking for clean install which is huge pain. Is there any other way to do this?
