Hi everyone

A few months ago, we have no issue with Company Portal, even sometimes it will not open, all we need to do is to go to Microsoft Store and update the app and it will then open it.

Nowadays for some reason, when we setup laptop through autopilot, sometimes the Company Portal is not even install, and now since the Private Store no longer working, the whole store instead is completely blocked. Is there other ways to install Company Portal.

Also we noticed some laptop don't even have the windows common apps installed, e.g. Camera, clock, calculator, etc. The app appear in the Start menu, but it cannot open and it looks like it is still in progress to install/download. Is that to do with Microsoft Store being blocked?

Anyway I done some research and people either said Company Portal (which we are using but if you don't have it installed in the first place what can we do) and WinGet, how do I know if I'm already using WinGet?

Thank you

Hey All,

So I've been tasked with finding a new wifi solution for our org. We installed ubiquiti a few years ago when we were smaller and they're pretty much EOL. We have grown a bit since. Also have a high RF floor due to lab equipment. Leaning heavily toward extreme networks as I have some experience with them in the past. Smaller org, any recommendations? Reaching out to Juniper as well to setup a demo of Mist. We are runnig dell switched so not sure if Aruba would be wise to loop in as well. My CIO started this project about a year ago leaning toward Ruckus but ive head nothing but a garbage experience with them in the past.

We use MS 365. I've tried multiple ways to change this setting across our organization but none seem to work:

  • Group Policy: User Admin Templates->Microsoft Office 2016->Links->Choose which browser opens web links, change to System default browser
  • Intune: Configuration Profile->User Config->Microsoft Office 2016->Links->Choose which browser opens web links, change to System default browser
  • MS 365 Apps Admin Center (config.office.com) Policy->Choose which browser opens web links->Default Browser
  • Registry: hkcu\software\microsoft\office\16.0\common\links BrowserChoice and BrowserChoiceTime - obfuscated with binary. Copying the registry key created from another machine does not change the setting in Outlook

Has anyone else ran into this or suggest a solution? For now, we've just emailed everyone the instructions through Outlook how to change it manually.

I decided to try the Settings Catalog instead of admin templates through Intune. That at least shows it trying to apply - with Error and no error code lol. Very helpful, MS. And on the 1 PC it did successfully apply to, it didn't actually change the setting.

Audix was a voice mail system that AT&T originally developed, that was sold under the AT&T, Lucent, Avaya and other brands. Does anyone still happen to have a working instance, or install media for any of the 90's era versions of it? I'm looking for a few specific files, but if you have the install floppies/CD I think that could work too. These were usually installed on an AT&T microcomputer running Sys V Unix, and mostly targeted larger enterprise PBX voice mail systems. I would be greatly appreciative if there's anyone here who still has some old disks they'd be willing to part with or knows a friendly unix hacker who still has one of these old guys running. Feel free to DM me if you think you have something, I'll do my best to make it worth your while.

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why this happens?

When running w32tm /stripchart /computer: I get a response back like every 2 seconds, but after a while start getting error 0x800705B4 3 times and then a response. I can stop the command, wait a little bit, and then the same thing happens.

This is the response:

as you can see, it responds back to back for a while, then fails 3 times then i get another sample back.

Is this some kind of default mechanism in the w32tm utility or is the NTP server actively refusing so many attempts consecutively and then it responds?

I'm kinda new at my current gig, and inherited a squirrel's nest of fibre cabling, patch panels, and FCAL and Ethernet switches from 3 different vendors across four different major firmware releases.

This makes things annoying.

I want to be able to test fibre runs, LC and MPO, before I start plugging things into them and wondering where the magic light went.

Any suggestions on gear?

I'm hoping to get a new job next year and have been looking for tech/IT-focused job fair in my area. I would like to go since I get the chance to have a brief F2F recruiters and reps and maybe have an idea of what I actually want to do, because I don't have that part figured out yet.

Are job fairs of any use or has the interwebs made them obsolete?

Today I had 2 emails make it through exchange and they were delivered to everyone in the org. The first was from a gmail account with the name of our director with a change in one letter. Example:

From: Ali Perrish [email protected]

Subject:Re: What time are you here? Body: Empty

There was nothing linking out in the body.

The second was something similar with a different employees names but instead asking that their credit card Info be updated.

I guess my question would be how I can mitigate and lessen this for the future? I obviously can’t block the gmail domain, and they do not have the funding for MS Defender( if that would even help) or something like mimecast. I have a pretty strict policy in place, and haven’t had anything happen until now. Is there some sort of spoofing policy for users? Any advice is appreciated!

I'm a lead engineer with a realtively large tech company, my role is mainly implementing new systems and mitigating security risks. My IT manager came to me the other day with an interesting question and I was a little stumped to come up with a good answer at first.

"If you had unlimited funds to spend on security/IT improvements, what would you suggest we do?"

To preface this, we are a relatively proactive company working to constantly advance security, there is a large board meeting coming up and the CIO posed this question to the manager. I'll give a bit of background on where we are now...

  • Full Azure AD, no On-prem
  • Devices are AD Joined using autopilot.
  • Fully E5 licensed and using almost all key security features.
  • Actively monitoring Defender for Endpoint for vulnerabilities and patching them rapidly.
  • Using SIEM with a 24/7 monitoring team to track risks in AD, Devices and connected services.
  • Mostly remote users with laptops, all via a Cloud Network Gateway firewall

I understand it would be even harder not knowing more about the company and I can provide a bit more context if needed.

One of my thoughts was to spend more on training IT and security teams up on latest certifications, since that's probably going to have the biggest flow on effect.

What are some of the big spend improvements you would love to do but are held back due to costs?

I setup file auditing to track when a user deletes files or folders, and creates files and folders within a directory.

(this is the guide I used)

Whenever the user creates a text file, it first shows up as "New text document.txt" and when it is renamed to "test.txt" I get an event that a file was created, but that new name "test.txt" doesn't show up, it just says that within a folder a file was created, but it doesn't give me the specific file name created, my only hint is that just before, a "new text document.txt" was created and deleted.

I'm sure you all get the tech questions from family/friends expecting you to fix dumpster fires with your magic skills. I want to find a consumer level support company I can refer them to. Maybe like a consumer level MSP or something that can run their updates, tell them to upgrade and login remotely when they have issues. Anybody know of a place like that?

I have recently seen a lot phishing emails on m365. The emails are customized to each user that receives it i.e. it has the name of each user on the email. How do hackers harvest users emails from a company and then create a custom phishing email to send to each each user? Anybody with the same problem?

Hello,

We use HP Printers almost exclusively for our desktop printers and we have many networked Work-group printers that are also HP.

One of my guys asked be the other day about buying a non-HP printer for someone since the HP printers have become something of a chore to install and maintain. As the head IT guy, I start thinking and wondering why we were still exclusively using HP printers. Back in the day it made sense. But times have changed and I found I had no good answer to that question.

So I turn to the hive-mind: what printers are you using for desktop and network and why?

My personal check list of what a good printer would have would be:

  1. Easy to install
  2. Easy to update
  3. They actually have updates (especially security updates)
  4. preferably not inkjet. (ink is too expensive)
  5. Have high volume/high capacity models
  6. Reliable

Thanks in advance!

My business doesn't use Google Drive, but we engage with other businesses that do.

In the past month, I've suddenly received a number of reports of documents being shared to us from Google Drive and the link demanding Google credentials to their work email account. Those Google accounts don't exist. (These shared document emails are not fraudulent.)

Previously, my users could have a code emailed to their work account, and this code was enough to prove they control the email address that was being shared to. Google would let them see the document.

When one of my users goes back in their email history and uses one of the old links, they can access the old document. Then, from that same browser, they can access the new links (that would otherwise demand credentials) and are whisked right through to the document. (All credit to them for finding this workaround. This is one of those things that is both clever and dumb.)

Did Google change some default setting lately to cause this miserable behavior? Do I need to train my users to how to train their contacts to share out of Google Drive so we can see it? I'd prefer to not have my users creating Google accounts with their work email addresses. (Thankfully, they don't believe me when I tell them this is an option.)

Service to be restored by 5:00 p.m. CST

Update Edit: Looks like it was Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee

Mine seems to be up now, and my job's as well NW Tenn

This has been a loosely enforced, unpublished "guideline" that I think needs to be upgraded for a more formal, enforceable rule based on the recent flurry of rants about ranting.

This thing is not yet chiseled into the stone tablets, so if we want to wordsmith it a little, now is the time.

Any word structure I use below that sounds like I've already decided what we're gonna do is just for my own sanity & convenience.

I think this might be a reasonable solution to the rant situation, and am honestly seeking input, and if possible, consensus or agreement.

"Rant threads must provide a useful outcome."

"Printers suck."

"Screw you Adobe."

"My users are so stupid."

"Does anyone else work with stupid managers?"

"I had a crappy day today."

As they appear right there, none of those threads provide the community with a lesson to be learned or a tip or trick to be discussed.

All of those threads (assuming there is no meaningful content in the body of the thread) will now be subject to removal upon discovery or reporting.

However, versions of those same threads that provide the community with some kind of a lesson or tip or trick or benefit IN THE OP are safe from removal.

This applies to threads that are not asking for assistance. Threads that express frustration while describing a problem, as part of a request for assistance are also safe from removal.

A rant that basically ends with a "does anybody else agree?" is just a rant seeking affirmation and is subject to removal.

We've expressed a desire to provide at least some leeway to members of the community to use this as a bit of a water cooler to vent since so many of us are working from home full-time now and have no peers to vent to.

I think we can dial that back and direct those members towards the IRC or Discord channels since those are far more water cooler like environments anyway.

I work for a mid sized global company. Myself and my counterpart at another location handle all of the equipment returns for all of the US. We have users returning differing amounts of equipment including laptops, monitors, monitor stands, printers, docks, and cell phones. My counterpart has a very adept shipping department that customizes the boxes they send with a lot of packing material, but it requires back and forth with the user to determine how many boxes and what size to send.

I don't have an adept shipping department. Currently, I have people go straight to UPS or fedex and use our account information to have them pack and ship it all, eliminating any back and forth with the user and doesn't force the user to pack at all. Recently I've had issues with UPS not allowing people to use our account information, but I hate the idea of chasing down users to get all the dimensions needed, then being a middle-man with the shipping department to get everything coordinated.

I feel like the easiest way for us is to have a concur account for users so they can just get reimbursed for shipping equipment back, but I would need to convince my boss of this.

How do you handle equipment returns?
