I'm pimping another community, I hope that is okay. I created https://lemmy.world/c/songaweek which is modeled after the reddit sub songaweek.

Every Thursday a new theme is posted. We all spend the next week writing a new song. By Thursday we have our song as done as we can get it and then we post it here for everyone to hear. We then will give feedback on the song, no negative critiques please. These songs were written, recorded and mixed in 7 days. We want to encourage song writing. Your song does not need to use the provided theme, write about about whatever you want. The provided theme is just to get you started.

This weeks theme is the chord progression i-VII-VI-V. I'd love to see all of you there. https://lemmy.world/post/1884588

This week's theme is the descending chord progression i-VII-VI-V, otherwise known as the Adalusian Cadence, which in itself is a bit of a misnomer as it's usually used as an ostinato rather than a cadence. The Andalusian Cadence comes from flamenco music. In the key of A minor, the chords are

Am - G - F - E7

An historic pop music example is Runaway - Del Shannon - (as an aside, this song has a pretty cool pre-synth keyboard part, played on a Musitron).

Some other examples: Like a Hurricane - Neil Young All Along the Watchtower - Bob Dylan Happy Together - The Turtles Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits Your theme this week is i-VII-VI-V

Songs posted in this thread should be:

Original content (samples and such are ok)

Uses the weekly theme as inspiration.. or not!

Written entirely during this week, between July 20th and July 26th, 2023

Are you tired of writing the same old stuff? Maybe you want to expand your knowledge of chords and harmony. Here are two easy ways to spice up your songwriting and get inventive with harmony.

Hello!

This is one of the first songs I have wrote lyrics for. I would play each section and then ad lib the lyrics. I think it sounds a bit cheesy-indie, but that is also what I was going for.

I guess my question is; is the lyrics too cheesy for this track to be taken seriously?

Also, what do you think about the little "Lorde" breakdown around 1:30? does that add to the track at all, or am I just making a fool out of myself?

"50/90" is a challenge that started decades ago on Yahoo! Groups, with the goal of writing 50 songs in 90 days. It starts on July 4th, and goes til October 1st. These days the challenge is hosted on the FAWM website.

I know you're probably thinking "there's no way I can write 50 songs in 90 days!". And yeah, it's not easy, and usually less than 10% of participants make it to 50. I've been doing the challenge since 2016, and in a few years I wrote only 3 songs.

The important thing is that if you write one more song than you'd normally write, you're already a winner! 50/90 is an incredible supportive community, with prompts and challenges for inspiration. It's a great way to get feedback on your songs, and to practice finishing songs!

The website is live, and the challenge starts in a week... who's up for it? ๐Ÿ™‚
