On 10th of November, I got a obvious phishing sms message on my private phone number. I don't sign up for random shit and very rarely give away my actual number and this typically means I never get ads or phishing texts.

I was kinda shocked to see that I got a phishing sms text about Netflix when I had fairly recently subscribed for Netflix membership. Is it true that Netflix is selling customer details to data brokers? (my guess is yes because most are doing it) Or is it more likely that its just a coincidence?

I never signed up to services like Incogni or deleteme.

For those wondering, here is the original message:

NETFLIX: Vas racun obustavljen, azurirajte svoje podatke na : netflix-account-renewal.com

Translated:

NETFLIX: Your account has been suspended, please update your information at : netflix-account-renewal.com

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place..let me know if not. Since around the end of September, I've been getting a stream of texts, notifications and emails saying here is your access code to X,Y,Z. At least twice a week I'm getting a push notification from WhatsApp, showing me an access code. Last week I deleted WhatsApp off my phone and I got 2 emails looking for an approval log in.

When it first started, I contacted my mobile network provider (irish Network Gomo)and they just said to ensure my phone number wasnt visible on telegram (which it wasn't).

Im in quite a complicated situation with a very unstable ex partner, so initially i thought it was connected to that but then scammer tried to access my revolut (I nipped that in the Bud straight away) and then tried to access to apps i dont even have an account for, So I dont think the two situations are connected.

Given complicated situation above, this whole thing is an added anxiety. I've been sending very personal emails and in the process of signing contracts on a home, so its not the best time for me for someone to gain access to my accounts.

Ive been regularly checking bank accounts, and checking what devices are logged in on apps and no evidence of anyone other than myself.

If anyone could advise on how to stop this or where to go to get advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

(Ive recieved notifications from WhatsApp, telegram, amazon, revolut, gomo, Uber, tiktok and then today Temu, which certainly wasnt me because I hate that site)

I bought a brand new Google Pixel 8a in a shop (owned by one of the big mobile network operator company where I live) November the 5th. When I started to check the settings, I noticed something strange: there was a Wi-Fi data usage in September. How is it possible if the phone was supposed switched off (with factory setting)?

https://imgur.com/a/N65LPLc

Just a clarification: the day I bought the Pixel, I turned it on and connected it to my other phone's mobile broadband. However, I didn't do the set up and turned if off right away because the battery was low. It's only a few hours later that I really started the installation process. Is it the reason why 64 bits were used (considering the real date wasn't defined yet)?

Data is the new blood.

Little parasites take it without consent if you aren't protecting yourself.

Enough parasites can ruin your life if you let them. And there's lots of parasites out there.

Willing plasma donors happily sell parts of it for beer money.

Some people will tell you that it's healthy to lose some of it now and again. Big Leach says you have to feed the beast.

With the right assurances and safety precautions, I will give it up with consent and some paperwork.

I wanted to apply to several restaurant jobs and they use a portal website called Staffedup to accept your applications. I couldn't find a delete your account button and when I emailed support asked them to delete my account they sent this message:

Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately due to legal requirements for employers to keep records of applicants who apply at their establishment, we are unable to delete your account. However, you can remove all outstanding applications and make yourself non visible to anyone by simply setting your status to “employed not seeking additional employment” inside of your StaffedUp account and turn off all notifications as well if you no longer wish to receive further communication. Hopefully this helps and we hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you!

The StaffedUp Team

Is there anything I can do about this?

Hi all,

My boyfriend got this email this afternoon and I’m very worried! It had both our full names on it and it’s obviously spam but I just don’t know where they would have found information that had BOTH our names together (which I’ve blurred out).

We have reported the email as spam. We are getting married soon which is how I think there might be a connection with our names online but I haven’t even made us a website with them together so maybe the wedding websites we are using to plan are selling our info?

Is there anything I should do besides mark this as spam?

This is what the email said:

From: [email protected] You should know this

Hi A (bf’s full name),

We apologize for the intrusion, but this might be important for you.

Do you know E (my full name) ? We have information suggesting they might be cheating on you.

Click the link below for full details about this person.

We have access to their phone content, social media accounts, dating profiles, cloud storage, and other relevant information.

Additionally, you can request reports on other individuals within the United States.”

What should I do?!?

I have been to several airports which have self service E-Gates that use biometric data to verify your entry to a country. I usually ask nicely to use the traditional boarder control method (human looks at your passport) which 9/10 times is accepted with no questions asked.

Recently I was denied this and forced to use the E-Gate (UK) despite not consenting and protesting this, they would not give me a reason why. Currently there is not guidance on the .GOV website regarding the right to refusal of E-Gates or a requirement to use them when entering the boarder.

Can someone explain my rights to me to prevent this misuse of power at the boarder again and to protect my biometric data from being stored and open to a potential data breach?

Thanks!

Links below are all I can find when trying to protect my data alongside the guidance for E-Gates in the UK.

I'm making a 101 cybersecurity zine with some IT and security friends to help kinksters, women, queers & trans ppl start protecting their digital privacy during the ~Current Era~. Can anyone suggest privacy topics I should add? This is what I have so far.

-basic arguement for why digital privacy is so important

-keeping devices prviate via 2FA and not relying on only biolocks

-encrypting communications via using end-to-end apps like Signal or Protonmail

-encrypting files and folders that contain private information

-managing passwords

-browsing privatley online using TOR/VPNs/etc

-reviewing photos for personal info and stripping the files of EXIF data

-protecting ebooks from censorship by mananging them locally with Calibre and stripping them of DRM software + keeping your reading habits private by paying for books in cash.

-tracking periods/fertility/miscarriages/abortions privately

I got room for one or two more topics. Any suggestions? Bonus points for what's most relevant to kinksters, women, queers & trans people.

I'd like to be able to speak into my phone and have it write down what I'm saying on some sort of note-taking app.

The Notes app that comes with iPhone has this but to use this feature you have to "enable diction" in settings, and when you do this it explicitly says that it sends anonymous transcripts to Apple. I don't like this, because what if I mention names and personal information?

I tried a couple of other apps, but they all require you to turn on that diction thing in settings which sends transcripts to Apple.

Does anyone know a more privacy-focus app for this? Or other solutions?

Someone has my info and tried opening 5 different credit cards but we’re all denied due to me freezing my credit. I got a letter in the mail from LexisNexis claiming I tried to use their site and they were unable to authenticate my identity so they couldn’t process it.

Whoever has my identity/info, why are they trying to use LexisNexis? What does this company do? Should I reach out to LexisNexis?

Hello,

Obviously, every web page we visit is trying to collect browsing history and other personal information. Is there a program I can run on my machine to randomly do web searches and browse web pages in order to obscure any actual web browsing I do? The idea is to just bury those tracking algorithms with trash data so they don't really know what I care about. If many of us ran such programs it could break them.

Thoughts?

I was wondering if there was a way to spoof my real number so that when I give it to people it is not my real number but I receive their calls and texts on my real number. The same way your IP is spoofed and gives a false IP.

If there is not a way to do it; is there a way where I can give a number to people online without the fear of being doxed? Since my number is very easily reversible.

Kinda want to try a palm reading and there's a big subreddit for it. But you have to take a photo of your hand and post it.

Is there some privacy risk for this? I've read that your unique fingerprint can be harvested from a photo?

If so is there a reliable way to put some kind of "privacy mask" over my hands in Photoshop?

On SM where I have to post selfies (for example to join FB groups) I've modified my eyes in Photoshop and blurred my face slightly with a few different blur tools for the same reason. But if I blur my palms it might cause readers to be not able to read the lines.

Thanks

Hey everyone,

So we all know by now that our data is constantly being tracked, analyzed, and sold by big tech companies. They’ve made billions off of our browsing habits, often without us fully understanding or getting a say in it.

I’m working on an idea for a browser extension that could flip this around a bit. The concept is simple: instead of companies profiting off your data behind the scenes, you’d actually get paid for sharing it, if you want to, and with complete control over what’s collected. Here’s the gist:

  • Total Transparency: You’d know exactly what data is being shared, with options to pick and choose what you’re comfortable with.
  • Privacy and Compliance: The data would be anonymized (not traceable back to you) and GDPR-compliant, so it respects privacy rules.
  • Earning from Your Data: Instead of just being fuel for someone else’s ad profits, your data would give you a way to earn.

Here’s where I could use some input from folks who really get privacy:

  1. If you knew exactly what was collected and had control over it, would you consider something like this?
  2. What would make this feel more privacy-friendly to you?
  3. Do you think an idea like this could actually work, or is it just another way for companies to invade privacy?

I’d love any thoughts or feedback, especially if there are ways to make this work without compromising the values around data privacy that we all care about.

Just updated from geforce experience to the new app and it has microphone on by default, so if you do any recordings of gameplay using the application, your voice from that time will be in the video. You can turn that off by pressing alt+Z and toggling microphone off. Doesn't look like it's sending anything over the wire but maybe someone who knows networking better than I do can verify that. I dunno, just seemed a bit weird to me for voice recording to be on by default.
