Yahoo Sports can confirm Harbaugh will be suspended for the first three games of the regular season for making what the NCAA deemed to be false statements amid an investigation into alleged recruiting violations that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic dead period.

...

It’s a self-imposed suspension from the university that will allow Harbaugh to return for Michigan’s Week 4 game versus Rutgers on Sept. 23, the Wolverines Big Ten opener.

The negotiated resolution between Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and the NCAA over alleged recruiting violations was not approved by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, sources confirmed to ESPN, which leaves the timing of Harbaugh's expected suspension uncertain.

It had been widely expected that the committee would approve a four-game suspension for Harbaugh to start the 2023 season, but that hit roadblocks this week, per sources.

Sources cautioned to ESPN that the next steps are uncertain, and Harbaugh's status to start the season or any potential suspension has yet to be determined. The case could go to a full hearing of the committee or Michigan could attempt to self-impose penalties. This step doesn't mean that Harbaugh has avoided trouble, but rather faces other avenues before he is expected to be punished. A push to a full hearing would mean a resolution wouldn't come for months.

The looming suspension is tied to an NCAA recruiting investigation into Michigan in which Harbaugh faces a Level I violation, the most serious kind in the NCAA's purview, for not cooperating with NCAA enforcement. While the suspension and negotiations with the NCAA have not been finalized, the expectation is that Harbaugh would miss the first four games of Michigan's season. That includes four home contests in which Michigan is the prohibitive favorite — East Carolina, UNLV, Bowling Green and Rutgers.
