I am strongly considering picking up a recent gen X1 Carbon. I really the like the idea of the device, having cellular data, working fingerprint reader and maybe even using it with an eGPU for some gaming. How possible is all of this on Linux? UPDATE: I managed to find a 9th Gen Carbon with LTE, I can't wait it for it to get here. Arch Wiki indicates everything should work.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T480s laptop running Fedora 39 Kinoite. I would like to use it in a multi-display setup, so I am looking for a docking station. The laptop has a Thunderbolt 3 port. I have attached the details of my device at the end of the post.
People on Reddit are writing that "all Thunderbolt docking stations should work fine" and that's obviously not the case... I have this Dell Thunderbolt Dock (WD19TB) at home from work and the displays work when I plug it into the laptop but, for example, my mouse (connected via USB-A) doesn't work. When I connect it to the DELL laptop provided by the company, there are no problems at all.

Docking station requirements: Ethernet, 3x USB-A, 1x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI.
I have two 1080p displays: 75Hz and 165Hz. Obviously I'm not going to be playing any high-frame-rate games on this laptop, but even on a desktop it's sometimes nice to see a slightly higher refresh rate. So if it's possible, I'd like it to be able to display things above 60Hz...
I also have a Steam Deck OLED and would like to be able to use this dock with it.

I don't want to spend too much money on it. Do you have any experience in this area and can you help me choose?

I am from Poland if it helps in any way (maybe some brands are not available here).

Any other NUC 12 Enthusiast users out there. Just wondering if any of you guys are still successfully using it on the latest distro's with ARC support, or whether rebooting still has issues for more than anyone but myself (just picked one of these up the other day, and I suspect there are recent regressions maybe)

To start off with I had a Ryzen 3400G and an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max that had become unstable and took several tries to boot. I decided to swap in an ASUS Prime B550M-A wifi.

The only issue is I was triple booting Kubuntu, Windows 7, and Windows 10, so this would be interesting.

TL/DR:

Kubuntu booted normally. Like seriously, just a regular boot, no messages or anything.

Windows 7 froze a few seconds into the loading screen. I tried rebooting and using safe mode, but that froze too.

Windows 10 gave a bunch of 'rechecking' and 'fixing file system' messages, and after about 2 reboots with more messages, opened to a workable desktop.

anyhoo, having trouble getting my WD19 dock to display 4K@60Hz. the laptop is a Dell Latitude 5290 2-in-1, it supports DP-Alt over USB-C (no Thunderbolt) and a direct connection from the laptop to the screen works. however, attaching the monitor to the dock via DP, and then connecting the dock to the laptop with its USB Type-C cable with PD yields 4k@30Hz max.

Dell has a bunch of newer WD19 models (TB, S, etc.) but I don't have those.

it is possible that my hardware is faulty as I've sourced it nth-hand, but before I start replacing it one-by-one, maybe someone got it to work? thanks.

I'm looking for a laptop to use while I'm away from home (Already have a desktop). My requirements are:

• Recent (Zen 3 or 4) 8-core CPU
• 16Gb RAM minimum
• RDNA 2 graphics at a minimum
• A non-gaming keyboard (no weird colored keys and RGB can be disabled)
• budget: $1200 or so

A discrete GPU isn't necessary, but if do I get one, it might as well have 8Gb, so the 3050/3060/4050 are out. I'll mostly use it for web browsing, video editing, light Blender use, and light gaming. Anything will be an upgrade over what I'm using now.

I have this and a 500GB HDD 7,200RPM ST500LM21-1KJ152 in LVM RAID1 and after I added a ~15GB QCOW2 image to it it had a SMART Health Status of "24 bad sectors" even though they were "Current Pending Sectors". As seen below...

Is it likely this HGST drive is gonna bite the dusts and I should be looking at getting another used drive off of E-Bay to replace it (I don't want to buy a new drive if I can avoids it for eco friendliness reasons)? Or it fair to assume it's will normally functions generally speaking if this is the only thing it's complaining about?

I am also doing a extended SMART test on it right now as well. To see if there are updated results on it as well.
