I am Half Russian and Half Armenian. After my Armenian father passed away my mother moved to US probably in attempt to get me away from Russia & large Armenian family. Anything armenian was always down played by her and my aunt (Armenian genes are bad etc). So I mostly grew up feeling ashamed of being Armenian - even that my name is ARMEN. Still I felt close to the country I was born (Russia) and never completely assimilated in USA.

Later in life I end up dating an Asian woman while she was on working visa in US and we been in relationship for almost 5 years. We traveled a lot and last year we tried to living together. Everything seemed almost perfect.

However, about 2 years ago something dramatic happens in my life. I was pushed my own girlfriend to find out more about my father and talk to my Armenian relatives (who were attempting to reach me since I moved to US). I end up learning a lot secrets and lies of my mother about my father. Turns out I have several half-siblings from my father and in general a very large Armenian family. When I confronted my mother about her lies, she effectively cut me way and my GF from my family in USA. Out of everyone on my Russian side, only my mother still contacts me for financial support.

Now being cut away by my Russian "family" I feel alone and strange in USA. I have greater desires of repatriating back to Russia or Armenia. Also knowing that I was raised through my childhood to hate Armenia and my father, I started to develop reluctant feelings toward my girlfriend even that I still love her. Now I have reservations about marrying since she is not Armenian.

Now I ask will this relationship work if I decide to move back? Or relocate to Armenia? How would my Armenian side look at me? Will they also ouster me? How do I preserve my language and culture especially when only family I had in USA do not want have anything to do with me anymore.

Obviously language and culture of my girlfriend is very different from mine and she also has very large family. This leaves me alone in trying to preserve something that I am. And of course life wirh someone Armenian would not have those cultural problems.

Am I wrong to be reluctant and feeling reservations with my current relationship? Is it just result of sudden changes in my life?

Or should I still go with it and make it work?

What would you do?

Original Title: Comment by prominent Azerbaijani journalist Cavidaga: "Yes, unluckily for us, those Syrians filmed themselves a lot, enough to be geolocated in Horadiz and other places. I am not against mercenaries, may be if we had more of them, my friend wouldn't be martyred in Füzuli."

Some of you may be familiar with Cavidaga (real name Javid Agha), he is a (relatively prominent) Azerbaijani anti-govt journalist/activist who was pretty active on twitter, although his account there seems to be gone now for some reason. I never agreed with his views but always thought him to be one of the most reasonable and level-headed Azerbaijanis active online and had a good amount of respect for him.

I saw this gem of a comment from him on r/Azerbaijan today on the topic of Syrian mercaneries (for context, he was replying to someone asking for proof of the Syrians having participated in the war). It's great to see that even one of the most "civil" Azeri figures isn't against sacrificing Syrians to kill us, even given the context of his friend.

Here is a webarchive link:

I don't like to do this kind of "drama" but considering he is a prominent figure I wanted to draw attention to the disgusting comment and the underlying mindset it shows. I lost pretty much all hope in Azerbaijani civil society since 2020 but it pisses me off to see that even the seemingly normal people think like this.

Please don't go interact in the comments or message him or whatever, it's not worth it and not the point of this post.

Have been in Yerevan for a week now and I’m going to rent a car starting tomorrow to drive around for a few days. Plan on seeing Sven lake and going to see some mountains. Any good viewpoints and towns I should visit?

Hi Everyone,

So here I am trying to make sense of things. So far other parts of reddit has not believed me and made jokes instead. I am asking a serious question.

I am running a New Lenovo Laptop (G4) on Ubuntu 24.03. Previously I had Opensuse for the last 4 months, but Opensusse experienced the same problems.

I am a qualified computer and network technician, although I have not worked in the field for a number or years, I still have an understanding of most things. Nothing in my knowledge is making sense about this issue, which is why I am asking the internet for help in figuring this out.

  • We have 1 router which is ISP owned and controlled. I do not have access to modify this router. Only the ISP does.
  • We also have a second router which I personal own. All computer on the top floor of our house are connected to this router - which is connected by lan cabe to the first ISP owend router downstairs.
  • If I connect my computer directly to the ISP router (by either ethernet or wireless) The internet simply does not work
  • If I connect it the computer to the router upstairs, the internet works for a bout 1-5 minutes before it stops working.
  • I know for a fact my computer is fine. It works perfectly when I tried it on my neighbors' network. It works perfectly when I tried it on my friends network, and it also works perfectly when I connect it to the wireless at my neighborhood bar.
  • Our home network itself also seems to work fine. 4 other computer connect to the same ISP router and have no issues.

So the issue here is between my computer and the ISP's router. As already mentioned I do not have access to the ISP router, so I cannot check or modify it, and the ISP denies that they are responsible.

What I tried to to to solve the Issue.

  1. I changed my mac address on my computer then plugged it into the ISP router. The internet worked perfectly for 2 days, before it stopped working again.
  2. I changed my mac address and connected to the ISP router by wireless. It worked fine for 2-3 days before it stopped working again.

This made me suspicious. Why would it work for a short time just because I changed my mac address? Is the ISP blocking my MAC address specifically?

Before going further, yes the ISP can access my mac, address and computer name ,etc. Their technicians clearly told me this on the phone.

So this brings me to the question: Is the ISP specifically targeting my computer? I know it sounds crazy but hear me out.

The government in the country I live has admitted that the are running "covert operations" to monitor the internet activity of more that 150,000 people. The announcement was made via the ministry of internal affairs.

People included in this "covert" operation" are also foreigners. I happen to be a foreigner here, with a valid visa of course.

Now this is worrying, because the population here is small and 150,000 people is ALMOST 10% of the entire population. So the government basically admitted that they are spying on the people's internet activity, and the ISP is probably obligated to help them.

Eventually I got fed up. I did not even know if it would work or not. However I got a VPN since February. Ever since I got the VPN my internet on my computer works! And it works even faster than without the VPN (which means the ISP was probably throttling as well). However the moment I turn the VPN off the internet stops working completely (there is no kill switch, so turning it off should simply revert to regular internet connection but it doesn't).

Reddit's arguments:

  1. Reddit says that the VPN works because it is configured properly. And that my connection without the VPN doesn't work because it is not configured properly!
  2. They say this problem is my fault because I am not configuring it properly. They say I must go in the router and fix the issue in there.

Reminder: The router is ISP owned and controlled, I do not have the ability to configure anything. So while I agree something can be configured wrongly, that is not my fault because I do not have the ability to access or configure the router. Also the ISP refuses to check and insists that the router is fine, so there is no hope of properly configure anything, if this is indeed the problem.

If there is a configuration problem it is the ISP's fault as they are the only ones who can configure it.

Also don't suggest getting my own router. All ISP's in the country I live insist that you must use their router and that you cannot use your own.

Sorry for the long post. This is the basic issue an what I have tried and been advised to do. I would just like to know why my computer won't work on the normal ISP router? Does anyone have and theories or ideas?

Thanks!

Hi All

I came across a clip on Reddit from ‘88 Yerevan demonstration that shows an Armenian speaker pointing to someone else and saying in Russian “he didn’t cut Turks, he killed them”. Do you know where I can find the clip?

Thanks

I am coming to Armenia to teach English, and try to give humanitarian aid where I can. I need a place to stay I will be there for 6 months. I looked on Airbnb and would like something a bit cheaper so my money can go a bit farther towards helping people. If you have an apartment, or you know someone who does please let me know. It would at least be guaranteed rent for 6 months. Thanks in Advanced.

Hi all, I need to do some research on the arevakhach (Արեւախաչ ; "sun cross") and am having trouble finding scholarly sources. The Wikipedia page directs me only to a bunch of broken links, and everything else I can find online is mostly pop stuff with no sources. If anyone could recommend some scholarly articles/books or even encyclopedic sources beyond Wikipedia, I would be so grateful. Can be in English or Armenian (or French is fine too). I find it so odd that I'm having such trouble finding sources because the arevakhach is such a well-known symbol in Armenian iconography. Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right places. So grateful for any help! Thanks in advance!
