I'm fiddling with a card game concept, and a very important part of it is creatures interacting with other specific kinds of creatures. This necessarily means I need to come up with lots of type names that are descriptive but vague enough to shove literally anything in them. Here's some good examples: "bug" containing ants, shrimps, pillbugs, bees, and literally anything that could be called a creepy crawly; "fish" containing everything from salmon to sharks to eels to octopi; "trees" containing all the stuff you are thinking of as well as those precambrian 6-foot fungi pillars; and "cats" including housecats, big cats, cheetah, and carcals.

And that's everything I can think of that would be useful. You see my problem? I know there are other casual-usage words for big categories of critters, but my grasp of the Enlgish language is fickle and leaves me whenever it is most inconvenient. If there is a list I could work from, that would be very helpful. Otherwise, volunteer as many words as you think would be useful.

Lately I have been having a lot of fun playing around with mestastic devices, older phones, and so called "dumb phones". I dont plan on getting rid of my current smart phone (at least any time soon) but I do want to see how it feels to go back to a dumb phone.

Anyone have a preferred dumb-phone setup that still works with 4G?

I want to be able to:

1. Make/receive phone calls
2. At least be able to see texting
3. Replaceable battery
4. (optional) some sort of directions (google maps/OSM+ etc...)

Things I have looked at:

• Ive been looking at some of the new Nokia offerings and it looks like they are going full retro which I like. I just dont like how thin the plastic looks. It looks like the phones could die at any point.
• I took a look at https://www.wiphone.io/ and that looked neat, but no GSM (phone calls outside of wifi) so thats a no go.
• https://dumbwireless.com/products/punkt-mp02 looked almst perfect....then I saw you can repair the device or replace the battery.
• https://dumbwireless.com/products/light-phone-2 looks nifty but again cant replace anything.
• Sunbeam F1 Horizon might be a good fit given that you can take out the battery but the price is a bit steap.

What do you all think?

When you're reading or listening to verbal material ( e.g. fiction, nonfiction, prose, poetry, lyrics, etc.), what kind of imagery has the most impact?

Imagery in the broad sense (including all senses, not just sight).

"Kind" can be whatever categorisation you can think of, e.g. genre, sense, place, scale, human/non-human, etc.

I don't want to be notified everytime I get a reply to one of my posts. Is there a way to turn this off?

I did retirement home training and used to think it was a sweet job. Then I got in the business and underestimated how demoralizing it was as they give you the easy elders in training while the others make you, or at least me, really think of the fact the job just amounts to an unkarmic freebie.

Whenever I see threads and comments about privacy-related or sensitive topics, I often see concerns about China in particular stealing all that data.

Why is China, a country across a vast ocean, is seen as a bigger threat in that regard than US itself? Unlike Chinese, the local government does have power over its residents and can actually use this information against you (and it does have a record for doing exactly that). The only places where Chinese espionage would be a concern (military, high-tech industry) lay way beyond what an everyday American faces regularly.

So, is it a new red scare, or is there a substance behind it that I fail to see?

As a child, we had a book of scary stories that included some absolutely ghastly but entrancing pen-and-ink art. I'm 99% sure they're not "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark". I don't remember much, but a few things stuck with me:

• a picture of a diver in an old-timey deep sea diving suit and maybe a sea-witch type character draped in seaweed.
• at least one really creepy drawing of a willow tree
• one or more of the pictures also involved a classically gothic cliffside along the sea.
• I want to say the binding was green or teal
• no dust jacket that I recall, but it could have been missing
• as a child, it struck me as old but not ancient, so I'm guessing it was from the late 60s or early 70s maybe
• my parents let me read it, and they were Mormons and frankly not really readers, so I'm guessing it was sort of vaguely considered age appropriate in those days if parents didn't look too close.

Style-wise, as I recall it kind of split the difference between Edward Gorey (thanks, @[email protected] for unearthing my nightmare fuel) and the semi-famous Darth Maul concept art from Iain McCaig. I have downloaded the first two volumes of SStTitD, as they are technically old enough to be the ones, but while they're definitely in the same milieu they're not what I'm thinking of. The art in this had heavier linework and IIRC used pen-and-ink crosshatching instead of shading; I also can't find any images in those two that hit me as "THAT'S IT!".

This could absolutely be a wild goose chase down memory lane, but any suggestions?

I tried looking around a little and it sounds really scammy to me. All the contact info and domain registrars is listed "redacted for privacy." Personally the whole thing seems to smell funny to me but I could be wrong. Anyone used or heard of this site before? I just want to make sure my daughter isn't going to get screwed over

Basically do people use timers? An app that prompts you when to shift to a different speed or exercise/resistance? Watch the clock?

As title says, no idea how this might work. I found workout plans, but they are like "so many minutes doing this thing, then switch to the next thing" and I really suck at watching the clock when working out.

I like the classes locally but I'm not able to get to them with my schedule.
