NKD: Kershaw Livewire

I've wanted a Livewire for a while, and I'm going to be somewhere it's legal to carry for a while so I picked one up used. OTF knives are often optimized for the preferences of the mall ninja crowd more than for practical utility, but this one seems to strike a good balance.

Initial impressions of the Convoy S21E as a bike light

I've been running my Convoy S21E (B35A 4500K, 20x65 striped TIR) as a bike light for a week or so now. I find it's a big upgrade from the Wuben B2 I had been using because the beam is a more suitable shape, and it doesn't throttle if I keep my speed up.

Of course if it doesn't throttle, runtime is 73 minutes, but it's 73 minutes of 1500 lumens of glorious 97 CRI simulated daylight. I'll bring spare batteries.

@Cooljimy84 These don't quite have the hard cutoffs that are ideal for bike lights, but they come pretty close.

I put a Nichia 719A in a C8 (social.goodanser.com)

I put a Nichia 719A in a C8

This is an old XinTD C8. That's a retired brand from Hank Wang of Emisar fame; Convoy is the place to get a C8 these days, and they'll even pre-install the 719A (or just about any other LED you could possibly want).

It's 3000K, high-CRI and about 500m FL1 throw. I like it.

@Showroom7561 @flashlight There have been Olight models on this list before. There aren't any currently due to the company's heavy use of proprietary batteries. Their LED selections in many models also leave something to be desired.

@EmperorHenry The MH25 Pro is a much fatter light that doesn't fill the same role. Direct competition for the MH12 Pro would be more along the lines of the Fenix PD36R v2 and Acebeam T35.

Review: Nitecore MH12 Pro - a relatively slim light with a big battery and a long range beam

The Nitecore MH12 Pro is a relatively slim light that can put a lot of light downrange for a few seconds, but that performance comes at a cost. If you're a first responder, this light may be for you, especially if you're on call out of uniform.

Review: Skilhunt H150 - my favorite small headlamp

The Skilhunt H150 is a small headlamp with great color quality, magnetic charging, and the ability to use both 14500 Li-ion and AA batteries. It sets a new standard in its size class.

Changes aren't huge this time around:

Remove SC32 (high-CRI option discontinued)
Remove SP31 v2 (discontinued)
Remove Zebralight H53c N (overpriced)
Add H200 and H200 Mini
Acebeam L35 becomes 2.0
Wurkkos TS10 becomes 2.0
E70 (21700) removed (high-CRI option discontinued, and the low-CRI version isn't that special)

Arbitrary List of Popular Lights - Spring Equinox 2024 Edition

In honor of Spring Equinox, I've made an updated list of popular lights. The sun may be returning, but you still might need a flashlight.

@solrize Current measurements are in the runtime table. Like I said, I think the output (and therefore efficiency) measurements may be a little optimistic. It does have a boost converter.

I agree a powerbank function would be a great addition here. It would be the perfect larger travel light if it had that. The tailcap magnet is easy to remove.

Review: Acebeam E75 - an efficient general-purpose flashlight with great color rendering, USB-C charging and a 21700 battery

https://zakreviews.com/acebeam-e75.html

Some tools do their jobs so well they're a little boring to write about. The E75 provides everything most of us could want in a midsize flashlight, and very little we wouldn't.

@solrize They're not sense resistors; they're just resistors. There are no active electronics in this light. Changing a resistor should change the output.

Looks like a typo caused excluded the graphs, which I've now fixed. I think they answer the other question: output depends on battery voltage in both modes.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

@solrize Sofirn definitely sold a 10180 light. I don't know if it was identical to the Trustfire, but it had a removable battery and high-CRI option (SST-20, I think).

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

@SammysHP @flashlight I'm sure we'll know when it actually comes out. Their "tailor-made" language suggests they're having a manufacturer produce a bespoke design for them.

I'm sure Nitecore hasn't build their own semiconductor fab just to make an LED, but smaller manufacturers might be up for semi-custom runs.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

@solrize How would you like the index to be structured? Currently, there are tags and it wouldn't be hard to use them to make some sort of index.

I've had the Mastodon comments for a while, but nobody commented until I (and many others) started using Lemmy. I modified this code and should probably update it:

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

@solrize it's an issue for all the Skilhunt lights with magnetic charging. It's not nearly as bad as when Olight did the same thing, but Olight fixed it.
