nintendrones are the most brainwashed corporate bootlickers I've ever encountered

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are continuing (and finishing) one of the all-time classic anime OVAs, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989), with episodes 3 through 6. There’s a war in the future against the Zeon empire, and a lady must get into the robot to kick some butt. But what if war was actually bad? Whoa. It is one of the highest-rated animes on Letterboxd. After that is British Claymation comedy A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019), the sequel to Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015), which was a hit here the other night. An alien falls to earth, and Shaun has to herd her back to her home planet, while keeping her away from sinister humans who want to capture her. It’s ET, but with Shaun the Sheep. Good reviews, so let’s watch. Last in tonight’s lineup is Sailor Moon R The Movie: The Promise of the Rose: (1993), because we already watched the other two OG Sailor Moon movies, so we may as well finish off the series. An old alienfriend of Mamoru shows up in Tokyo and seeks to choke humanity in a sea of vines; cue chicks rocking. The other films were good, so I feel confident this one will be, too.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

For this Friday Movie Night, we’re starting off with one of the most highly-regarded Mexican films of all time, The Exterminating Angel (1962). It is a darkly comic satire about a bunch of rich people who go to a dinner party and then find themselves unable to leave; supernatural forces proceed to torment them. The director is renowned surrealist auteur Luis Bunuel (Un Chien Andalou, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie); this may be his magnum opus. After that is our obligatory God Damn America film for the week with Matewan (1987), a highly-acclaimed drama about a coal miners’ strike in 1920s West Virginia, and the attempts of the government and capitalists to break it. This is one of the classics of the worker-solidarity genre. Director is John Sayles, who is otherwise best-known for Lone Star (1996). Looks cool; let’s watch.

For this special Tuesday Movie Night, first up, by special request, is the Coen Bros.'s 1950s Hollywood satire Hail, Caesar! (2016), concerning the search for a movie star who suddenly disappears during filming. Hilarity ensues, including some Cold War Red Scare commentary. We've watched most of the Coens' filmography at this point, and we're not stopping now. After that is Wallace & Gromit spinoff Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015), a British claymation comedy concerning a sheep who separates from his master and goes on a wacky slapstick adventure in the big city. Great reviews for this one, and the Chicken Run movies were a hit here, so let's keep the ball rolling. Last in tonight’s lineup is Sailor Moon S The Movie: Hearts in Ice (1994), because I accidentally put on the SuperS movie the other day, and since that one also has some Christmasey stuff in it, I didn't even realize it was the wrong one until after it was over. Anyway, this is the Christmas installment of the long-running series, in which the girls must stop an evil witch from covering the world in ice. Look, it’s a Christmas anime, alright? Good enough.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, it’s a whole bunch of Christmas coming your way. First up is Soviet fairy tale The Snow Queen (1957), concerning a young girl’s attempt to rescue her brother from the frosty lady demon who has hypnotized him. Hayao Miyazaki cites this film as one of his chief influences, so let’s give it a whirl. After that is the first two episodes (of 6) of one of the all-time classic anime OVAs, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989). There’s a war in the future against the Zeon empire, and a lady must get into the robot to kick some butt. But what if war was actually bad? Whoa. Although this series is set at Christmastime, none of the Christmas elements show up until episode 4. Oh well, we’re still watching it, since it is one of the highest-rated animes on Letterboxd. Third for the night will be The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (1978), directed by Czech maestro Karel Zeman, which is a surrealist fairy tale about a boy forced to become the servant of an evil wizard who loves making little boys miserable on Christmas. Will nothing stop his reign of terror? I guess we’ll find out. Last in tonight’s lineup is Sailor Moon S The Movie: Hearts in Ice (1994), the Christmas installment of the long-running series, in which the girls must stop an evil witch from covering the world in ice. Look, it’s a Christmas anime, alright? Good enough.

For this Friday Movie Night, we’re starting off with another entry in the God Damn America canon, A Raisin in the Sun (1961), featuring one of the most highly-regarded performances of the late Sidney Poitier. A poor black family in the hellscape known as America struggles to get by, until one day, they stumble into an insurance payout that promises to solve all their problems. What could go wrong? Nothing, I bet. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Daniel Petrie, who has not otherwise done much of note. Looks neat; let’s watch. After that is our obligatoy Christmas film for the night, Supermarket Woman (1996), another highly-regarded comedy from Tampopo (1985) director Juzo Itami. A small business owner is really bad at running his grocery store. In comes a middle-aged woman to spruce the place up. The premise is pretty much Tampopo, but with a supermarket instead of a noodle restaurant. Throw in some holday cheer and you’ve got a sweet little comedy that has received rave reviews everywhere.

Yes, we’re holding an extra movie night this week, because ‘tis the season, and the people have demanded the beloved claymation classic Chicken Run. In the first film, Chicken Run (2000), directed by Nick Park and Peter Lord of Wallace & Gromit fame, chickens on a Br*tish farm discover class solidarity and decide to escape before they are slaughtered. Then, in the sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023), made with only minimal involvement from Park and Lord, the chickens find themselves on an island paradise that isn’t so idyllic after all, because it contains more things that want to kill chickens. Looks fun.

For this Sunday Slop Night, first up is, by request, Hoot (2006), a family film about a trio of kids who team up to stop some evil developers from plowing over the habitat of an endangered owl population. Kids rock? I guess we’ll find out. This is the only film of director Wil Shriner; he is a one-hit wonder. Second is the highly-acclaimed Italian union drama-comedy, The Organizer, about a well-read socialist professor at the turn of the 20th century who tries to organize a strike of textile workers, and has to deal with false consciousness and liberalism every step of the way. Director is Mario Monicelli, who also did the anti-Rififi film Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), which was a hit when we watched it a month ago. Superb reviews across the board for this one, so let’s give it a shot. Last for the night is Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train (1989), a comedy following several storylines of odd characters during a night in Memphis, Tennessee, including a ditzy bellboy, a Japanese tourist couple, and a trio of bumbling thieves. Steve Buscemi is in it. The previous Jarmusch movies we’ve watched (Down By Low, Ghost Dog) have been great, and this is supposed to be one of his best. Let’s watch.

For this Friday Movie Night, we’re watching one of the all-time classics of Indian cinema: Nayakan (1987)! Imagine The Godfather, but in Tamil, and with the melodrama cranked to max, and a bunch of song-and-dance numbers thrown in. Dude gets too far in with the mob, and then he becomes the mob. We have not watched much from India, despite the size of its film industry, so we may as well start with one of its most critically-acclaimed, canonical works; nothing but praise for this one from pretty much all corners. It is considered the magnum opus of director Mani Ratnam. Okay, we’ll give it a try. After that will be our obligatory God Damn America entry for the week, with Frances Ha (2012), directed by critical darling Noah Baumbach (Manchester by the Sea, among others) and starring another critical darling, Greta Gerwig, who is now better-known as the director of Barbie (2023). She plays an aspiring dancer trying to launch her career in New York, and finds that showbiz sucks ass. Excellent reviews for this one pretty much everywhere, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Sunday Slop Night, first up is Macario (1960), a Mexican ghost story / fairy tale about a man who meets three spirits on the Day of the Dead, one of whom is Death, who gives him water that acts as a magical cure-all. Surely this won’t backfire in any way. This film is almost universally considered the magnum opus of director Roberto Galvadon, and one of the best Mexican films of all time, so we’ll give it a shot. After that is Nobody Knows (2004), a Japanese family drama about a preteen boy who has to take care of his family by himself after his mom suddenly disappears. Where the hell did she go?! Director is Hirokazu Koreeda, who also did Shoplifters (2018), which we previously watched. The film is currently ranked #111 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 films of all time, which is a good enough endorsement for me. Let’s watch.

For this Friday Movie Night, we’re watching an African movie, because the whole continent has been pretty much ignored by us so far. It’s Hyenas (1992), a comedy about the most popular guy in a small town, who suddenly becomes not-so-popular when a jilted ex-lover, who has become wealthy, returns for revenge. This is one of the highest-rated African films on Letterboxd, and arguably the best-regarded work of director Djibril Diop Mambety, so let’s watch. After that is The Last Picture Show (1971), one of the most critically-acclaimed films of the 1970s, and one of the crown jewels of the auteur-driven New Hollywood era. It concerns a pair of teenage boys (one being The Dude himself, Jeff Bridges) in a shithole Texas town who desperately want to get away, while engaging in some horny teenager antics on the side. Often considered the magnum opus of director Peter Bogdanovich, whose Paper Moon (1973) we previously watched.

For this Sunday Slop Night, first up, by request, is Serbian war dramedy Pretty Village, Pretty Flame (1996), concerning a squad of Bosnian Serb soldiers who find themselves trapped in a tunnel by a Bosniak assault, with childhood friends finding themselves on opposite sides. Surely this will end happily. This is the best-known and most highly-regarded film of director Srdan Dragojevic, and is considered more broadly to be one of the best Serbian films of all time. We’ll give it a shot. After that is the Iranian meta-comedy-drama-thing about a girl who has to find her way home after her mom fails to pick her up from school. Where the hell did she go?! Also, the movie takes a cool meta turn after awhile. This is one of the highest-rated Iranian films on Letterboxd, and arguably the best-regarded of director Jafar Panahi’s career. Let’s watch.
