Light switch advice (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Just looking for some advice if the idea I have in mind is even feasible.

I have 2 light switches in my kitchen, one for some pendant lights, one for some overhead cannister lights.

I hate the placement of the switches, since the pendant lights which I prefer are far away from the actual doorways into the kitchen. Meanwhile the cannister lights are on the switches near the doors.

I'm looking to do some clever "hackery" to make it so the switches by the doors control the pendant lights, if possible, but I don't want to have to rewire things in the walls/ceilings.

Is there a good solution to this? I was looking at some Shelly switches, but I'm not sure those solve for the problem I wanna solve. I'm willing to swap out switches or wire in things near the lights, but trying to keep things simple as possible.

Any other E6 fans on here??

I think my fave track so far is Staten Island Ass Squad but there's a lot of gems on this one.

I hope everyone reading this knows that you can just not connect a "Smart" TV to the internet. Leave it as a "dumb" TV.

Get a separate device like a Roku or AppleTV or Amazon Fire or whatever. The garbage hardware that TV manufacturers slap inside a TV so they can advertise its "smart" features will always be inferior to a purpose built external device.

To say nothing of the security implications of having an unpatched probably unsupported IoT device running on your network for years.

BetterTouchTool (which isn't free but is worth every penny) lets you do everything rectangle does. Also lets you configure your mouse buttons to do whatever you want. Also infinite custom hot keys and shortcuts.

Also Raycast as a replacement for Spotlight.

Pretty much anything by Electric Six or Clutch. Honorable mentions to Soul Coughing and VNV Nation.

Karma chameleon, you come and go ⋅ Karma police, arrest this ho. ⋅ Karma's a bitch, it gets a little jumpy when you come near.

-- Electric Six, (It Gets a Little) Jumpy

Like Harry Truman dropping bombs out of the air ⋅ Like any self-respecting multi-billionaire ⋅ This is who you are, five dancing teenage boys ⋅ Who sing their way into our hearts ⋅ Backstreet's back, alright

-- Electric Six, Jimmy Carter

Next thing that I did was tap out Morse code ⋅ With a wooden nickel on the receiver of the phone ⋅ Before I could complete it, I was quickly overtaken ⋅ By the angry spirits of Ronald and Nancy Reagan

-- Clutch, X-Ray Visions

But he also discusses why things froth and some of the science behind it. Might be helpful when selecting an alterna-milk?

I'm curious, what brand/model is the frother?

I have a bunch of Nest Detect (A0028) sensors from the now defunct Google Nest home security system.

Anybody know what radio protocol these things use? Zigbee? Z-Wave? some other thing?

I have a Z-Wave USB dongle, or I could get a Zigbee one, but I'm not sure if either of them actually communicates with these devices.

I hate to throw them away, as they're well designed.

TSA Pre-check.

Yes, it's fucking obnoxious that it exists at all, given the "security theater" of it all, but man... being able to breeze past the super long lines at the airport is such a better experience.

Lemmy in general? (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

How things are going with Lemmy in general?

  • The software is pretty promising.
  • The network of Lemmy instances is expanding rapidly.
  • The userbase is exploding even more rapidly.
  • The number of Lemmy mobile clients is up to 3, that I know of. (Jerboa, Mlem, Memmy)

The quirks of navigation takes some getting used to, and I kinda like the UX of Kbin better, but I find more engagement happening from the Lemmy side of things, so I guess I'm sticking here.

There doesn't seem to be a way to migrate instances easily (yet?) like with Mastodon. Not sure if that's important, but worth noting.

Pretty much anything by Yuval Noah Harari: Sapiens, Homo-Deus, and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century

Taken as a trilogy of sorts, they manage to do a great job of explaining how humanity got to where we are now, and assuming current trends continue, where we're headed in the future. All without being super dense and academic.
