@ncoca

I've had a theory for a while now that people on the right in the US will not actively talk about climate change until something catastrophic and irreversible happens to major city in a red state. That way it can't be dismissed as something else. My money is on Miami, Florida but it could also be a city in Texas (not Austin). And even then, it won't be talked about directly because it is such a deep part of the culture wars.

@ncoca

Because so many Americans think they are the center of the universe. And even within the US, many people don't look over their fences, especially if has to do with someone from a different political tribe. The LA Fires are dismissed by many on the political right because it is happening in California. I know many people back home (from rural America) who talk about California as if it is a foreign country.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] It is good text to introduce students to thinking on broader time scales and about big ideas, but one needs to use it as a jumping off point rather than a destination.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Thanks for posting. I used to teach the book to my undergraduates for a course on big ideas. I think my problem with the book is that he is nuanced when convenient and paints in broad brush strokes when convenient. For me, the one that sticks in my teeth is his views on religion, which is simplistic and lacks any sense that religions are wide umbrellas with MANY different features. @[email protected]

Full disclosure: my academic background is comparative religions.

I feel like we could go on -

Octavia E Butler: A Special Destiny will Save Humanity.

Ayn Rand: Special Rich People will Save Humanity.

Any others? 😂

@pablonaj I've heard really, really great things about Becky Chamber's "Monk and Robot" novellas.

Short stories are where you see a lot of great #Solarpunk stuff.

The "Glass and Gardens" collections edited by @sarenaulibarri are great and were one of my first introductions to the genre. Her "Another Life" novella is also great.

The "Sunvault" collection edited by @Pheebsdw is well regarded.

I've also subscribed to "Solarpunk Magazine" and I've been genuinely impressed by the stories.
