Just to suck the life out of this (yet another) hilarious vignette, did you know, according to the data gathered by defenders.org, in the United States more people are killed by cows than wolves?! The UK-based theconversation.com has a webpage advising how to stay safe around a killer herd!

I'm back. Didja miss me?

Have to politely disagree with Mr Ager's analysis/conjecture. While I may concede that some abuse may have happened in Alex's childhood, there's no solid or even implied link to either parent being the abuser. Unfortunately, people hang for such circumstantial or presumed evidence. I'll generously grant Ager that there may have been sexual abuse on the part of the law (Deltoid, police) and if any case may be made regarding the parents' culpability, it possibly would be their turning a blind eye to the presumed sexual abuse (there's a legal term for this but it escapes me at the moment).

Really? You need to see a (max.) 64px sq image of something to engage?

Here. Use an Invidious link instead of Piped. Best of both worlds: it doesn't link directly to privacy-ignoring YouTube and (usually) will show a post thumbnail image when linked to from Lemmy.

If you all will excuse me, I'm gonna engage in the linked analysis of A Clockwork Orange.

One of the internet's biggest secrets hiding in plain sight. The VHS Vault: now celebrating their 7^th^ year of curating color bloom, drop-outs and questionably legal content, all in glorious 720×480 NTSC video! 🤣

All kidding aside though, thanks, @minnix! 👍 There are some definite gems amongst the…uhmm…non-gems?

When was the last time you had USD$10B? Next you're gonna defend Mackenzie Scott's hard-earned USB$34B, I suppose.

Indeed. Now she has only ca. USD$11B left over to survive with. She can buy only five, possibly six Sentinel ICBMs.

Missouri…once again, making it too easy for social media! It's like living in an Onion headline…without the satire.

A longshot Missouri gubernatorial candidat e with ties to the Ku Klux Klan will stay on the Republican ticket, a judge ruled Friday.

Cole County Circuit Court Judge Cotton Walker denied a request by the Missouri GOP to kick Darrell McClanahan out of the August Republican primary.

McClanahan is running against Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe, state Sen. Bill Eigel and others for the GOP nomination to replace Gov. Mike Parson, who is barred by term limits from seeking reelection.

McClanahan’s lawyer, Dave Roland, said the ruling ensures that party leaders do not have “almost unlimited discretion to choose who’s going to be allowed on a primary ballot.”

@[email protected], it's one of my favorite movies too! ❤

The Terrible Secret of Mulholland Drive

I'm not a big fan of YouTubers analyzing Lynch's works but I felt this one fills in the gaps in the film's popular dream-logic "explanation"…

Spoiler alertlike the film's continuance after the main character's death, which always stuck in my throat.

It's a little long, around an hour, but if you can overlook host Rosseter's terrible David Lynch impression, it's definitely well thought out.

Cheers!,

A Michigan man whose 2-year-old daughter shot herself in the head with his revolver last week pleaded not guilty after becoming the first person charged under the state’s new law requiring safe storage of guns.

Michael Tolbert, 44, of Flint, was arraigned Monday on nine felony charges including single counts of first-degree child abuse and violation of Michigan’s gun storage law, said John Potbury, Genesee County’s deputy chief assistant prosecuting attorney.

Tolbert’s daughter remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition from the Feb. 14 shooting, Potbury said. The youngster shot herself the day after Michigan’s new safe storage gun law took effect.

We see posts everyday, some (most) with a square-cropped image to the left. Some of these post images, let's call them "post icons", are there because on the "Create Post" form there is a text entry field explicitly pointing to the author's uploaded image. Otherwise, the post icon is an image from the link entered in the URL text entry field.

Are you with me so far? I hope so.

Now, sometimes the URL returns an image and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't, a default Lemmy link icon appears.

Here's an example. The linked page has an image but it doesn't appear as a post icon.

  1. How can I get the URL to return an image I know is on the linked page. Not necessarily a specific image but any image from the link.
  2. Is there a way to use an author-chosen image when no linked image exists (or if I'd like a different image)? I've tried using both the URL and the Image fields but unfortunately the Image link takes preference.

I hope I've been clear. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. Thanks!

EDIT: added the post icon image.

We've been following this since it first came to my attention in mid-November here and here.

It's the latest action General Motors is taking against Renaissance Center Management Co., the private security force that was created by the company to patrol Detroit's iconic riverfront RenCen. GM contracts with G4S to provide the security services through the company, according to court records.

Officers can no longer carry handcuffs, according to Kevin Kelly, a spokesperson for GM. The number of officers allowed to carry guns has also been reduced, although some still carry weapons for protection against dangers like active shooters, he said.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave…"

The private security force is majority-owned by G4S Secure Solutions, an international security company based in Florida, according to court documents filed in 2022. Allied Universal acquired G4S in April 2021. GM, G4S and RCMC have each been named in various lawsuits.

Separate investigations by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and Michigan State Police are ongoing.

My take? I thought you'd never ask. GM should at bare minimum terminate immediately their contracts with ~~Renaissance Center Management Co.~~ ~~G4S Secure Solutions~~ ~~Allied Universal~~ whomever they need to and find another agency that acts less (allegedly) like the Hells Angels at Altamont.

Syphillis!

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is sounding the alarm as syphilis cases spike across the state. The numbers of the bacterial infection are highest in Detroit.

So why are case numbers rising? Medical professionals say a lot has to do with people not going to the doctor for routine checks since the Covid pandemic.

Another contributing factor? The drug shortage that’s confronting the US. "One of the main drugs that we use to treat syphilis is in short supply right now - that has all of us very concerned," she said.

You're in good company!

Got a pretty Ford F-150 from 2021-2023 with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design sitting in your driveway? Read on…

The rear axle hub bolt may fatigue and break, which can damage the axle hub splines and result in the trucks rolling away when the vehicle is parked or cause a loss of drive power, according to the notice — both of which increase the risk of a crash.

Just a few months ago, Ford recalled more than 238,000 of its Explorer models due to an axle bolt issue that can cause the vehicle to roll away.

Note a pattern?

Cue appropriate video clip

Maybe you will be happy but this is my last (cross)post to c/detroit. This community started two years ago as a mirror to the Reddit r/detroit — which is still going strong — but after many attempts to contact them, it appears moderator @[email protected] has gone MIA and my (cross)posts are at best coincidentally mirroring the posts over at Reddit.

Anyway, if you're interested, I'm posting and moderating at [email protected]. Act accordingly. Thanks and hopefully I'll see y'all there.

Water Square? That's the best the marketing team could come up with? 🤦‍♂️ In any case, developers are planning a…

[…]600-room luxury riverfront hotel connected to ~~air-conditioned Cobo Arena~~ ~~Cobo Hall~~ ~~THC~~ ~~TCF Center~~ Huntington Place Convention Center

…where Joe Louis Arena used to stand

City law requires developers behind projects that are worth at least $75 million and receive at least $1 million in tax abatements to meet with residents and negotiate a community benefits agreement.

Past agreements have secured millions of dollars in donations for neighborhood programs and organizations, as well as commitments to hire Detroiters and support area businesses.

…the first meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 9 at Huntington Place. Two members of the neighborhood council will be selected at the second meeting on Jan. 16. Residents who wish to serve on the council or vote must appear in person.

They're even validating parking at the Fort/Washington Garage, so there's that.
