I remember when my dad lost his job around 2002. I was a little kid and my mom told me to be careful when I'm playing outside, because if I broke my arm we could lose our house. About 10 years ago, the crypto community was talking about this with regard to microtransactions. The idea was that nobody really wants to pay a monthly subscription fee to news publications, but getting someone to digitally pay 1-10 cents to read an interesting article is probably doable. Unfortunately, digital currencies became what they are today instead of anything actually useful.

I grew up forced to go to church and this is pretty literally a core point of the pastor's sermon multiple times. He told a story about someone trapped on their roof during a hurricane and was offered rescue by three different means but refused each citing God. The story ended like the punchline here.
