As an FYI to readers, port forwarding with ProtonVPN on Linux can be done, just with a little extra effort.

I'm split on this myself.

On the one hand, I do think there is a risk of Meta's influence becoming too pervasive over ActivityPub and ultimately kneecapping it. I think to presume this couldn't happen is naive. Further, Meta does have a history of trying to bring everything under its own umbrella, and if they see enough profit opportunity in trying to own the protocol then they will sink serious effort into doing so. They have done it with many other companies & ideas already.

On the other hand, preemptive blocking is not in the spirit of the fediverse, users should be able to make their own choice, and SDF is known for its general openness. "Why in this case and not others?" is a real question.

I personally don't think the influx of users/content & problems with "Eternal September" are too big a deal. True, I'm not a sysadmin or mod here. If those were real reasons to block the service then we should do it on logistical grounds without hesitation - there's no need for user input or discussion in that case.

Yes, that's true; everybody borrows.

This seemed particularly plagiaristic though. Oddly placed yin-yangs? Allusions to the Roma people? An underworld looking distinctly hell-like?

At least make me work to find the source material.

Yeah I agree the costuming was good.

Just putting this here for those who might miss it.

I saw season 1 and it was...okay? I gather that Wheel of Time diehards were upset about plot deviations. I never read the books so that didn't matter much to me. IMO the world setting seemed janky - it was as though Robert Jordan couldn't build an original world to save his life and borrowed bits and pieces of different Earth cultures and threw them in a blender. I could pass on the next season but I have too many people around me who will want to watch it so I feel somewhat compelled to.

What did you think of season 1? Will you be watching season 2?

Yep, this looks like the thing - thanks!

I haven't (yet) dipped toes in the *arr worlds yet, so it's great to know the feature's there.

Ahoy!

Once long ago I ripped some movies from DVD, and in ignorance, saved to a lossy format. (The DVDs have also long since gone.) This was fine for a time but now as TVs are getting bigger and quality is improving, I am seeing the compression artifacts.

Does anyone know of some software that will scan a directory for media, identify the codec used, and then find better quality rips present for download & replacement? I would rather not go through the process manually and I have to imagine I'm not the only one that's had this issue.

This is a neat idea I hadn't thought of.

She said many rich people wanted to set up their own educational or health foundations without checking whether there was a need or an existing charity or government-funded programme working to address the issue.

When the rich only think about charity as a means to further their own name, it's no wonder nothing ever really gets fixed.

The authors of the institute's report said there was evidence that audiences "continue to selectively avoid important stories such as the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis as they cut back on depressing news and look to protect their mental health".>

Bingo. However,

But the figures are much higher for young users. One in five (20%) 18 to 24-year-olds get news from TikTok, up from 15% last year. The report says the platform "is the fastest growing social network in our survey". However, it is not necessarily news from traditional news providers. TikTok users are more likely to get news on the platform from celebrities, influencers or ordinary creators than mainstream news outlets or journalists.

This is far more worrisome.
