Lemmy felt very unique, very different from the other softwares we tried, and very fitting for conversation. (Probably, it's the other way round: The community and the needs of the community grew around the software (then reddit), and the usage which worked best was the one which stayed in use...)

I had a lot of fun on lemmy, and I might continue using it! I started a Nomic community and will play a little over there. Feel free to join, even if you don't know Nomic yet – the rules are self-explanatory (but not in a good way :D).

If you would want reddit, you might not find exactly what you want. The community is different and smaller. But if you want Star Trek memes and politics, you might find interesting discussions. As far as I can tell, the inner workings are mostly copied, but I was never on reddit, so maybe that's something for the comments.

There are a lot of memes, which got me very easily distracted. The default view is "every community on this instance" and not "the communities you have subscribed to", which was a little annoying, but okay.

It actually federates quite well. You can follow users and even communities (the lemmy equivalent of subreddits afaik). To follow a lemmy community from mastodon, put the URL of the community (e.g. https://feddit.de/c/nomic ) into the search bar of your mastodon instance, as shown in the screenshot.

Another problem was that sometimes I couldn't post my posts, I just got stuck in a reloading state... I'm not sure if it's a problem of my server or the software as a whole. @blinry had the same problem.

Nomic Hangman (feddit.de)

Ok, I hereby propose the following ruleset for this thread: [mostly stolen from @No_Change_Just_Money ]

Nomic Hangman

Rule 0: a user may propose a new rule or a change to an existing rule in a comment to this post. If the difference of up and down votes is greater than 1 after 24h the rule will be added to the ruleset. The new ruleset and the numbers of upvotes and downvotes will be posted as an answer to the comment proposing the new rule or the change.

Rule 1: A user may post a number of blanks [_] each representing a letter from a word.

Rule 2: any other user may comment a Letter they think is in the word as an awnser to the post containing the blanks. If the difference of up and down votes is positive after 24h the letter is submitted.

Rule 3 if a submitted letter is in the word the first user will edit their post and exchange any blanks corresponding with this letter to this letter.

Rule 4 if a submitted letter is not in the word the original user will add one to a fail score.

Rule 5 if the fail score reaches 10 the game is lost. If all blanks are filled the game is won.

One thing I always found entertaining on reddit was AITA. It seems that there have been some AITA communities on lemmy, but they are deleted or have no recent posts. So, no assholes on lemmy? Or just self-righteous ones? :D

I can't see the original post on Mastodon, but maybe this one?

The term “community” is somewhat ambiguous here: the one “Lemmy community” doesn’t really exist, because the whole Fediverse is the community. It’s not limited to Lemmy users and can’t be separated. At the same time, there are the various groups/topics, which are also called “communities”.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm still a little insecure about the nomenclature; also, my interface is in German, so I'm not sure if a "Beitrag" is actually a "post" and so on... My question aimed at "the one Lemmy community" – as far as I can see, it's not very easy to really participate on lemmy from e.g. a Mastodon account. But please correct me if I'm wrong – part of the fedivoyage is finding out how good the softwares federate...

I also noticed this content orientation and I like it very much! I feels less like a guilty pleasure and more like real, substantial communication – with, as you say, context and the possibility to develop longer thoughts. I know that there's the possibility of some kind of thematic groups on Mastodon, but I don't really understand that fully yet.

It also seems to me that there's more communication between people who don't know each other. On Mastodon, I rather stick to the people I already know and rarely start a conversation with strangers, but I feel like over here, this is the default. Or is it?

Maybe it's time for a microblogging thing again, maybe gotosocial or some of the *key softwares?

Maybe there's even a possibility to stop voting?

Nomic is a game [...] the rules of which include mechanisms for changing those rules, usually beginning by way of democratic voting.

Newbies welcome, we haven't even decided about the rules yet :D

I would like to harness the possibility to upvote and downvote posts. Is there a possibility to close the voting? If not, maybe we could use that also – then voting would never stop, which would make things interesting at the very least...

#fedivoyage

This is a post with a hashtag! Try to find it in the fediverse!

What is your favourite characteristic of Lemmy? What details of the software or the community do you like?

  • Plume
  • blinry would like to try one of the *key software (like misskey, foundkey, ...)
