Some of us remember one of the first smartphones, the VisorPhone introduced in late 2000. Consisted of a Visor (basically a Palm Pilot knockoff by Handspring) that had a Springboard slot that you could slide a phone attachment into. I have fond memories of using it to bid on an AOL auction while driving down the highway with my ex-wife yelling at me that we were going to be killed...

Truly a product ahead of its time.

I see the drop in quality over there as the more technical (the best?) people migrate to the Fediverse. As others have noted, I'm not looking forward to all Redditors coming here and dropping the quality.

Old timers like me remember the quality of Usenet prior to ISPs making it available during the Eternal September. Before then, people on Usenet were largely college students or higher. Quality on Usenet really declined when it opened up to the masses, especially after AOL made Usenet available to its subscribers.

If you're not going to hook it up to the internet (bridging, access point, etc.), name it something funny or provocative for the neighbors.

For example, I live in a college student neighborhood with a lot of Chinese students. I have an old router that I'm going to use the network name 六四屠殺 which is Chinese for the June Fourth Massacre (the Tiananmen Square Massacre). It's a term banned on the Chinese internet.
